A presentation in Oak Ridge this evening will feature Ernestine Avery, one of the 85 African American students who integrated Oak Ridge Schools in 1955, a press release said.
Avery was one of the 85 students who had attended Scarboro schools before integrating Oak Ridge Schools in 1955.
The presentation will begin on Zoom at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. This will be during the monthly general meeting of the Oak Ridge-Anderson County NAACP Branch, the press release said.

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency has awarded a $106,000 HOME Program grant to the Oak Ridge Housing Authority that will be used to help low-income families purchase a new home.
The Oak Ridge Housing Authority will use the funding to provide assistance up to $14,999 to cover down payment and closing costs for eligible first-time home buyers living in the city limits, a press release said.
“A down payment is often the biggest hurdle to overcome for working families wanting to buy a home,” THDA Executive Director Ralph M. Perrey said. “These funds will allow first-time home buyers who would otherwise be able to afford a mortgage payment to overcome that obstacle.”
ORHA Executive Director Maria Catron said the grant will be used to help low-to-moderate income families, with the exact amount awarded based on the gap needed to cover the buyer’s down payment and closing costs.

The Dogwood Junior Championship Regatta is in Oak Ridge this weekend.
During the regatta, the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will partially close Melton Lake Greenway on Saturday, April 24, until Sunday, April 25, at 4 p.m.
“The closure is to help prevent the spread of COVID-19,” the city said. “It will be on the greenway between the boathouse parking lot and the crosswalk to the Emory Valley Greenway.”

The National Park Service is asking for public comments about the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. The comments are being sought as the Park Service prepares an interpretive plan for park programming, exhibits, and media, a press release said. The goal is to capture many different experiences and perspectives.
Discussions with the public are being organized by theme and region. The discussions focused on regions concentrate on the areas around the three Manhattan Project park locations: Hanford, Washington; Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Because of COVID-19, all events will be held virtually (online), the press release said.

“A Tribute to Alvin Weinberg,” including information on the new online database of his scientific publications and other documents, will be presented virtually to the public from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 (Weinberg’s birth anniversary).
The presentation, via Zoom, is sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge and Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
“The purpose of this public online event is to honor Alvin Weinberg’s legacy and to celebrate the preservation and digitization of his papers,” said Rhonda Bogard, who led the digitization of the papers, most of which were initially donated to the Children’s Museum in 1986. [Read more…]
ASAP of Anderson will have a Virtual Information and Resource Fair this evening (Tuesday, April 13).
The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Facebook.com/ASAPofAnderson. It will feature a panel of community leaders discussing topics that include the Tennessee Save a Life program, Count It! Lock It! Drop It!, the state’s social host liability law, safe teenager driving, available helplines, and hot to access a variety of other community resources and support services, a press release said.

A man who was wanted by law enforcement officers in Ohio fled and hid in an Oak Ridge church after a traffic stop Sunday morning, but an Anderson County K-9 unit found him hiding in a bathroom closet after a two-hour search, authorities said.
The pursuit began after the Oak Ridge Police Department stopped a vehicle on South Tulane Avenue at Wilson Street for a window tint violation at about 10:37 a.m. Sunday, April 11, the City of Oak Ridge said Monday.
After the initial contact with the driver, the driver fled from his vehicle on foot toward the First United Methodist Church at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, the city said.
A police officer chased the suspect on foot and saw him enter the church, the city said.
[Read more…]A man pursued by police ran into First United Methodist Church between services in Oak Ridge on Sunday morning, canceling services, according to witnesses and the church. The man was later caught, and no one was injured, the church reported.
There were reports of a large police presence at the church, including Oak Ridge Police Department and Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and the building was reportedly evacuated.
The man ran in as churchgoers were leaving the 10 a.m. service. The 11 a.m. service and Worship on the Lawn at 1 p.m. were both canceled as the building was still being searched and cleared, the church said.

The seven-year-old girl hit by a vehicle Wednesday evening had been in the turn lane with two other pedestrians before walking into the eastbound lane of Edgemoor Road and being struck by a pickup truck, according to a preliminary report by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
No charges have been filed against the driver, and none are pending, the THP said.
The crash was reported just before 7 p.m. Monday at Mooncrest Lane. It was near the Breadbox gas station and convenience store in Claxton.

A seven-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle on Edgemoor Road in front of the Breadbox gas station and convenience store in Claxton, and the child was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, law enforcement officers said.
The crash was reported at about 6:56 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, which is investigating the collision.
The investigation continues, and no additional information is available at this time.
