University of Tennessee football coach Butch Jones will be the special guest at a July 11 fundraiser for Blankenship Field.

Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally will also be there. So will board members of the Blankenship Field Revitalization Foundation.

The fundraiser will start at 11:30 a.m. July 11 in the banquet room of the DoubleTree Hotel on South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. Tickets are $100 per person for this buffet lunch, and they include an opportunity to hear from Jones, an event notice said. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Today has taken few days off for brief vacation

West Yellowstone June 24 2017

Oak Ridge Today has taken a few days off in order to attend a family reunion, and for the most part, we haven’t been able to post stories for the past few days.

We resume our regular posting today (Monday, June 26).

The family reunion was in West Yellowstone, Montana.

It’s the first vacation we’ve had since we started more than five years ago.

Cromwell sentenced to 12 years in fatal July 4 parking lot crash

CLINTON—Lee Harold Cromwell, 67, the Oak Ridge man convicted of vehicular homicide in a fatal parking lot crash at Midtown Community Center after July 4 fireworks two years ago, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Monday.

Cromwell—a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen driving on a suspended license, according to court records and testimony—was actually sentenced in nine separate cases. He had been convicted on all nine counts at the end of a three-day trial in Anderson County Criminal Court in Clinton in February. Besides reckless vehicular homicide, the nine convictions included eight counts of aggravated assault.

Senior Judge Paul Summers of Nashville announced the effective 12-year sentence at the end of a roughly four-hour sentencing hearing in Anderson County Criminal Court in Clinton on Monday afternoon.

The convictions had been split into three groups. The first group included the reckless vehicular homicide conviction, which was filed over the death of James Robinson, who died pushing his two young daughters to safety as Cromwell backed his Dodge Ram pickup truck through the crowded parking lot of Midtown Community Center on July 4, 2015. Witnesses said Cromwell backed up at a high rate of speed. That first group of convictions also included three aggravated assault convictions for injuries to James Robinson’s wife, Julia Robinson, and their two young daughters, now 11 and nine. Cromwell received an effective five-year sentence for those first four convictions.

Cromwell received an effective four-year sentence for aggravated assault convictions for injuries to two other victims (the second group) and an effective three-year sentence for aggravated assault convictions for injuries to three other victims (the third group).

The three groups of sentences are to be served consecutively for a total of 12 years (five years for the first group of convictions, four years for the second, and three years for the third).

ORNL’s Titan drops to number four on list of world’s most powerful supercomputers

Once the world’s most powerful supercomputer, Titan at Oak Ridge National Laboratory dropped to number four on a list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers released Monday.

Titan, a Cray XK7 system, was bumped from the number three spot by the upgraded Piz Daint, a Cray XC50 system installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre.

China continues to have the world’s two most powerful supercomputers.

The TOP50 List of the world’s most powerful supercomputers is based on a benchmark test known as Linpack. The list is released twice each year, once in June and again in November. The 49th edition of the TOP500 List was released Monday in conjunction with the opening session of the ISC High Performance conference, which is taking place this week in Frankfurt, Germany. rue21 now open in Oak Ridge

The first new store is open at Main Street Oak Ridge.

rue21, a teen speciality apparel retailer, had its grand opening on Thursday. The grand opening of the store was scheduled to include free giveaways to the first 100 customers.

rue21 is near Belk at Main Street Oak Ridge. That’s the 58-acre project to redevelop the former Oak Ridge Mall.

There are seven other new stores also expected to open soon. maurices has announced it will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its women’s clothing store at Main Street Oak Ridge on Friday, June 23. maurices is next to rue21. [Read more…]

National Park Service in Oak Ridge to move to Children’s Museum

The National Park Service will move its visitor center and offices in Oak Ridge to the Children’s Museum in October, officials said Friday.

The National Park Service has a visitor center and offices in Oak Ridge as part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, a three-site park that was established in November 2015 after years of advocacy.

The visitor center and offices are now located at the American Museum of Science and Energy, or AMSE, on South Tulane Avenue. But that museum is closing as part of a land transfer related to the Main Street Oak Ridge development.

“We have been so fortunate to have been based at AMSE for the first 18 months of this new national historical park,” said Kris Kirby, Manhattan Project National Historical Park superintendent. “The staff and volunteers have been outstanding partners providing space and backup support with all of our activities. We consider the entire City of Oak Ridge to be part of the park and will continue to offer programming in multiple locations throughout the area.” [Read more…]

Three adults found dead all had single gunshot wounds

The three adults found dead on Oak Lane on Thursday morning each had a single gunshot wound, authorities said.

The three were found dead during a welfare check at 101 Oak Lane at about 8:03 a.m. Thursday. They have been identified as:

  • Michael Deuschle, age 49
  • Tessa Deuschle, age 43
  • Chelsea Kessel, age 24

Oak Ridge police warn of ‘spoofing’ phone scam

The City of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge Police Department are warning of a scam telephone call that people may receive that uses a local telephone number with a 425 prefix and is titled “City of Oak Ridge.”

One of the numbers from which calls have been been received is (865) 425-1892. The calls have a recorded message that tell the person receiving the call that they have won a trip or something of value.

“This call is not from the City of Oak Ridge,” city officials said. “Rather, it is a scam which utilizes ‘spoofing’ software. Caller identification ‘spoofing’ is technology that causes the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of the call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station. In other words, the software allows the caller to program the caller ID to any message or originating title.”

Again, (865) 425-1892 is not a number associated with the City of Oak Ridge. People who receive these calls should hang up immediately and ignore any recorded message from the caller, the city said.

Rep. Fleischmann okay after shooting at charity baseball practice

U.S. Representative Chuck Fleischmann, a Republican whose district includes Oak Ridge, is okay after a shooting that injured five people during a Wednesday morning practice for an annual charity baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, officials said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and two Capitol police officers were among those hit, according to WJLA, an ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. The others who were shot sometime around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday reportedly included a staffer and a lobbyist. Scalise is reported to be in stable condition at George Washington University Hospital.

Conner Ingram, spokesperson for Fleischmann, said the congressman was at the practice and is okay.

“I have been told by staff that he is okay,” said Alan Beauchamp, a close friend of Fleischmann’s who has worked on his campaigns since 2009. “He is safe, from what I understand.” [Read more…]

Applegate named Oak Ridge director of administrative services

Bruce Applegate, who had been interim personnel director, has been named director of administrative services for the City of Oak Ridge, a press release said.

Applegate is a former assistant to the city manager. He had been leading the Personnel Department after the retirement of long-time Personnel Director Penelope Sissom in the summer of 2016, the press release said. Applegate was named interim department director while the city launched its search for a new personnel director.

Applegate has been selected to fill that position, although Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson said he chose to “re-title and re-tool the position” as director of administrative services. That decision came after careful consideration of the future of the position and how it can best serve the needs of all departments, the press release said. The new position will continue to oversee all Human Resources processes and personnel, but will also focus on strategic projects that have major impacts on the city. Council to consider engineering contract for pedestrian improvements on Turnpike, Illinois

The Oak Ridge City Council on Thursday will consider an engineering contract of roughly $300,000 for pedestrian improvements on Oak Ridge Turnpike and South Illinois Avenue.

Under the resolution to be considered by Council, the $298,800 engineering services contract would be awarded to Kimley-Horn of Nashville.

The estimated budget for the entire project, including both engineering and construction, is about $975,811. The work is being funded mostly with a Tennessee Department of Transportation Multimodal Access Grant of $927,021.40, Oak Ridge City Engineer Roger Flynn said in a May 24 memo to City Council members. The grant money will be allocated in three phases during a three-year period.

A 5 percent match of $48,790 is required, Flynn said. [Read more…]

Council to consider $75,000 in funding for 2017 Secret City Festival expenses

The Oak Ridge City Council on Thursday will consider whether to approve up to $75,000 in funding for expenses associated with the 2017 Secret City Festival.

The money would allow Celebrate Oak Ridge, the new nonprofit organization responsible for the festival, to pay expenses for this year’s festival, which started Friday, June 2, and ended Saturday, June 10.

The city has previously provided $50,000 in start-up funding for the new organization. That funding was considered in December.

On June 6, Celebrate Oak Ridge, an organization run by volunteers, requested additional funding from City Manager Mark Watson to “timely meet contractual obligations associated with the festival, including entertainment costs and other vendors fees,” according to a resolution that City Council members will consider Thursday.

“Celebrate Oak Ridge does not have sufficient capital reserves to meet their contractual obligations during the final week of the festival, which would impact this and potentially future events,” the resolution said. [Read more…]
