Fred Adrian Heddleson

Fred Adrian Heddleson, age 96, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the NHC Health Care Center.

Born March 28, 1917, in New Matamoras, Ohio, he was the son of Richard David Heddleson and Grace Beaver Heddleson, who preceded him in death, as did his sister, Vivian Karash, and his wives, Margaret (Peggy) Heddleson, Freda Fisher, and Ruth Bowen.

He grew up in New Matamoras and graduated from Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, Ohio, with a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering. After graduation and during World War II, he worked in development of the Martin aircraft top machine gun turret and electric devices for motors of the Norden bomb sight.

In 1952, Mr. Heddleson and his family moved to Oak Ridge. As an engineer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, his career path led to nuclear safety information and commercial nuclear power plant safety systems. [Read more…]

Orangie Jean Craig

Orangie Jean Craig, age 95, a resident of Clinton and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Craig was born on Nov. 30, 1917, in Robbins, Tenn. She later moved to Oneida, where she continued to live until her move to Oliver Springs in 1932.

Following the move to Oliver Springs she married her husband, Glen Craig, in 1938.

Before her retirement, she was employed as a sales clerk in several area dry good stores. [Read more…]

Cora Gregory Sluss

Cora Gregory Sluss, age 91, a resident of Knoxville and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at the Island Home Park Health and Rehab Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Sluss was born Nov. 1, 1921, in the Cades Cove Community in Blount County. When she was seven years old, she moved to the family farm in Sevier County. Following her marriage to her late husband, Charles Sluss, she moved to Oak Ridge, where her husband was employed in the development of the Manhattan Project.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, where she was very active in the Joy Sunday School class. She enjoyed working as a volunteer at the Mt. Pisgah Print Shop when she was physically able. [Read more…]

Eugene F. Young, age 81, departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his home in Oxford, Ohio.

A native of Oliver Springs, he was born June 22, 1932, to the union of the late Lloyd and Claudine Young. Gene, as he was known to many, was a businessman in Oxford, Ohio, area for more than 40 years as a builder. He is survived by his loving daughter, Hazel Burum Arnwine of Oak Ridge; his two sisters Virginia Grace Walker of Oxford, Ohio, who was devoted to his care, and Linda Weaver of New York, N.Y.; his two brothers Charles Earl Boyd of Oliver Springs, and Avril Hall of Oak Ridge; one aunt, Clara Hall Hughes of Oak Ridge; his special “angel,” Julia Jessup of Oxford, Ohio; Tony Terrell, business partner and longtime friend; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Allen Stanley Howell; his mother, Ruth V. Cameron Howell; his son, James Allen “Al” Howell; his brother, Bobby Joe Howell; and his sister, Kay Howell Lindsey of Chesterfield, Va.

Helen Madeline Byrd Monk, 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Oct. 2, 2013, at her home.

She was born on July 21, 1927, in Bakersville, N.C., to parents David M. and Maude Hughes Byrd.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and had been a greeter at Walmart.

Preceding her in death were her daughter Terre Marie Monk on Oct. 11, 1981, and her husband, James Hubert Monk on December 3, 2002. [Read more…]

Grace Margaret Finley Crabtree, age 74, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013.

She was born March 16, 1939, in Clinchmore, Tenn.

She was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Lake City. Grace loved crossword puzzles and was an avid reader who passed her love of books on to her children and grandchildren. She was a beloved grandmother who showed each grandchild they were loved and cherished by reading to them and baking cookies, and made any day better by sitting with Mammaw under the strawberry quilt. Jack Lovegrove

Jack Lovegrove, age 89, of Oak Ridge passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center.

Jack was born April 11, 1924, in Jonesboro, Tenn., to the late Arthur B. and Hattie Osborne Lovegrove. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served in World War II until 1946, attaining the rank of MM2C. Jack loved his country and considered it a great honor to serve in the military. It was due to this love that he joined the Army in 1948 and served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1952 having attained the rank of SFC.

In 1952, he moved to Oak Ridge. He was employed with Union Carbide at the Y-12 plant as a machinist until his retirement. Jack and his family became members of Central Baptist Church and was also a member of the International Machinist Union. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling having visited all 50 states. Gary Cheatwood, age 51, of Clinton, passed away on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Gary attended the Houston Community College, got his degree in nursing, and was an ER Staff nurse. He was an RN and traveled all over the world helping those who were in need, and especially enjoyed taking care of children who were very ill. Lillian Eskridge Pettus

Lillian E. Pettus, 79, of Oak Ridge, departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at the Methodist Medical Center.

She was born March 28, 1934 in Lafollette, Tenn., to the late Harry Eskridge and Nellie Gillard Eskridge.

Lillian was a member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church in Knoxville, and Elder Darris Waters Sr. was her pastor.

Lillian was a devoted wife of 59 years to Willie F. Pettus Sr. and reveled in her roles as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She had a loving spirit and an infectious smile that could light up a room. Our light is now dim, yet will shine again in the hearts of each person touched by her spirit. [Read more…]
