Helen Madeline Byrd Monk, 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Oct. 2, 2013, at her home.
She was born on July 21, 1927, in Bakersville, N.C., to parents David M. and Maude Hughes Byrd.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and had been a greeter at Walmart.
Preceding her in death were her daughter Terre Marie Monk on Oct. 11, 1981, and her husband, James Hubert Monk on December 3, 2002.
Her survivors include her son, James Hubert Monk II of Charleston, S.C.; daughter, Mary Willingham of Alabama; brother, David A. Byrd of Unicoi, Tenn.; sisters, Davenia Wolfe of Reno, Nevada, and Hazel Alma Adkins of Irwin, Tenn.; grandchildren; Leigh Allister Monk, Lucas Willingham, Albert Donnell Willingham III, James Lee Willingham, and Justin Mathieu Willingham; six great-grandchildren; several nieces, including Terri Michell Byrd; several nephews, including David L. Byrd and Mark J. Byrd; and friend and caregiver, Martina O’Brien of Oak Ridge.
The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to Laura’s Place, Kenya, in care of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1291 E. Madison Avenue, Athens, TN 37303, or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 327-A Vermont Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
The funeral mass was held Friday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oak Ridge with Father Sam Sturm officiating. Interment followed at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
