Overturned Coal Truck

Workers from Tennessee Towing of Powell pull a coal truck out of a ditch on Highway 95 near Bethel Valley Road on Friday afternoon.

A coal truck overturned on Highway 95 near Bethel Valley Road about noon Friday.

The truck ended up on its side and spilled coal in a ditch west of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The condition of the driver wasn’t immediately available. The Oak Ridge Police Department declined comment, saying an accident report would be available early next week.

Man drowns in Clinch River near Norris Dam

An elderly man drowned in the Clinch River Friday afternoon after his fishing boat capsized and he fell into the frigid water about a half-mile downstream of the Norris Dam, Anderson County Rescue Squad Chief Terry Allen said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification, Allen said.

The man’s body was found in the River Road boat launch area, about a half-mile downstream from where he was first reported in the water near a weir dam, Allen said.

Small fire in MMC emergency department quickly extinguished

The Oak Ridge police and fire departments respond to a small mattress fire on Wednesday morning in the Methodist Medical Center emergency department.

Note: This story was updated at 1:30 p.m.

A patient with a lighter who was experiencing a medical emergency started a foam mattress on fire at Methodist Medical Center on Wednesday morning, Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said.

In a statement, the hospital said the small 10:15 a.m. fire in its emergency department was quickly extinguished.

Stove fire Tuesday damages Jasper Lane home

A Tuesday evening stove fire caused an estimated $50,000 worth of damage to a Jasper Lane home, Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said.

The stove was turned off when the accidental blaze started at about 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, Kerley said.

No humans were hurt, but a family cat died, he said.

Oak Ridge firefighters responded to a car that crashed into the former Keeping Room on Rutgers Avenue at about 4:45 a.m. Monday.

On Tuesday, the Oak Ridge Police Department said an accident report is not available yet, but one should be ready later this week, possibly on Saturday.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

Hearing date delayed for sword stabbing suspect

The hearing date for an Oak Ridge man accused of stabbing another man with a sword has been postponed until Oct. 4, attorney Marty Cizek said.

Cizek said a psychiatric evaluation that was ordered on July 24 for Jeffrey John Smith, 30, is not complete. Smith had been scheduled to have an Aug. 28 hearing in General Sessions Court in Oak Ridge.

9/11 Remembrance Ride benefits Marlow Fire Department

The Marlow Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from this year’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ride, which will be held on Sunday, Sept. 9.

Registration for the 65-mile ride begins at 8 a.m. at the World’s Fair Park in Knoxville. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. with a flyover, “Taps,” 21-gun salute, and then the 9-11 memorial procession, a press release said.

Anderson County Sheriff takes part in campaign against drunk drivers

Law enforcement agencies across the country have stepped up drunk driving enforcement this Labor Day holiday weekend, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

The Sheriff’s Department is taking part in “Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over,” a campaign taking aim at drunk drivers, by conducting saturation patrols this weekend, the release said.

Campbell County man shot in Lake City

A Campbell County man was shot in north Lake City Thursday afternoon, Police Chief Jim Shetterly said.

Scottie Tackett, 29, was shot once at the intersection of U.S. Highway 441 and Railroad Avenue. He sought medical attention and was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by Lifestar helicopter, Shetterly said.

No information was available on his condition, UT Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Wyatt said Friday.

Drug dog helps find meth-making materials in car trunk

Two men were arrested Friday after an Oak Ridge police officer allegedly found a backpack in a car trunk filled with materials and equipment used to make methamphetamine.

Oak Ridge Police Officer John Thomas stopped a black Chevrolet carrying the two men—Cody Clinton Brown, 23, of Clinton, and Lonnie Ray Carroll, 43, of Briceville—after he observed an alleged hand-to-hand exchange between that car and another vehicle at Walgreen’s. Thomas said both vehicles left the parking lot rapidly as he approached.

Warrants: Officer threatened to ‘get even’ after woman refused to swap pictures

The former probationary police officer arrested Wednesday morning is alleged to have sent sexual messages to a woman through a social networking site, and he is accused of threatening to “get even” when she refused to text or swap pictures, according to court records.

Travis Lee Adcock, 30, of Coalfield, was arrested Wednesday morning, the Oak Ridge Police Department said. He is charged with civil rights intimidation and harassment.

Adcock allegedly contacted an Oak Ridge woman through meetme.com, sending her messages of a “sexual nature,” according to arrest warrants filed Wednesday morning in Anderson County General Sessions Court. He allegedly continued to send her sexual messages until he requested a picture.

Oak Ridge police arrest former probationary officer

A former probationary police officer was arrested Wednesday morning, the Oak Ridge Police Department announced in a press release.

The release said the Police Department this month started investigating the actions of former Oak Ridge Probationary Police Officer Travis L. Adcock, following complaints of harassment by a local resident. Adcock was an Oak Ridge probationary police officer from March 2011 to September 2011.
