Waddell Place Training Fire 1

Oak Ridge firefighters trained Monday at a blighted home set on fire on Waddell Place.

Firefighters trained this week in a blighted house that they burned on Monday on Waddell Place in Oak Ridge.

If all goes well, two more blighted city-owned homes on Waddell Place could also be set on fire and used for training, said Josh Waldo, Oak Ridge assistant fire chief.

The city had state approval to burn the home on Monday. A plume of smoke that rose above the ridge top could be seen for miles on Monday morning. Non-wood products such as shingles and plastic were removed before the home was burned. [Read more…]

A lower community classification for Clinton and its fire department could translate, overall, into reductions in insurance premiums for home owners, a press release said.

The Insurance Services Office Inc., or ISO, notified the city and the Clinton Fire Department of the new community classification, which is 02/2X. That’s lower than the previous classification of 4, the press release said.

911 Decal

A new state law that takes effect on Thursday, January 1, will result in changes to 911 surcharges on residential and business lines and cellular phones.

The Anderson County Emergency Communications District said the new law, the 911 Funding Modernization and IP Transition Act of 2014, passed the Tennessee General Assembly in April. It changes the way 911 surcharges are collected and paid and affects all 911 districts in Tennessee, including Anderson County.

“It updates the existing model for funding 911 to account for changes in technology and consumer choice by establishing a single, uniform 911 surcharge rate across the state,” the Anderson County Emergency Communications District said in a press release. [Read more…]

Six area children will have a little bit brighter Christmas this year, thanks to the efforts of Clinton Police Department officers.

On Tuesday, the kids, ranging in age from two to 12 years, went to the Police Department, where Santa had left several large bags of toys. Officers were there to help them unwrap a big assortment of games, dolls, videos, and more, a press release said.
