Clinton Public Library has partnered with two members of the Pellissippi Genealogical and Historical Society to offer a four-part genealogy workshop entitled “Genealogy 101: The Basics.”
Conducted by society members Stephanie Hill and Emily Haverkamp, sessions are scheduled for four Tuesdays: Jan. 29, Feb. 5, Feb. 12, and Feb. 19, from 6-8 p.m. There is no charge for the workshop.
The Tennessee Small Business Development Center and Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce are having a free workshop on Jan. 31 for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of how to start a new business.
The workshop will include information on business organization, licenses and planning; tax requirements; and financing options, with additional discussion about Small Business Administration loan guarantee programs.
An Oak Ridge woman charged with two counts of aggravated assault is accused of hitting a man in the head, pulling a knife on him, and then trying to run over him early Thursday morning, court records said.
Karol Ann Allred, 40, allegedly hit the man in the left side of the head during an argument on Lancaster Road at about 3:10 a.m. Thursday, according to affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court. Allred also allegedly pulled a knife on the man and got into her vehicle and tried to run over him as he left the home, the records said.

An Oak Ridge woman suffered possible injuries in a rollover accident on South Lansing Road on Sunday night.
Terry Beth Matthews, 48, was using her shoulder and lap belt and was not ejected, but she was taken by ambulance to Methodist Medical Center after her 2004 Toyota Camry rolled near Latimer Road at about 8:55 p.m. Sunday, an Oak Ridge Police Department crash report said.
Matthews was outside the vehicle, which was on its roof, when police and fire units arrived. Her passenger, Richard L. Sweeden, 48, of Kingston, was not injured, but he had left the scene.
Thanks to a Y-12 National Security Complex aluminum beverage can recycling program, more than 400 local organizations have received a $200 donation from the company since the program’s inception in 1994. Over the years, more than $81,600 from recycling revenue has been donated.
The most recent recipients are Tabitha’s Table, an ecumenical Oak Ridge food ministry that provides a hot meal weekly; Family Promise of Knoxville, a program for individuals facing homelessness for the first time in their lives; Sunshine Industries, a therapeutic recreation program for handicapped adults who live in Knox County; and People Promoting Animal Welfare, an organization that operates a feline/canine adoption center and spay/neuter clinic in Greenback and offers low-income families affordable sterilization of cats and dogs.

An unsuccessful bidding team led by The Babcock and Wilcox Company is protesting the recent federal decision to award a contract to Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC to manage and operate the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas.
The National Nuclear Security Administration announced on Jan. 8 that the consolidated contract had been awarded to Consolidated Nuclear Security, or CNS. That team includes Bechtel National Inc. and Lockheed Martin Services Inc.
The B&W-led team is called Nuclear Production Partners LLC, or NP2.
Anderson County, Clinton, and Roane County have announced that their schools will be closed Friday due to the weather.
Anderson County said its central office staff will follow established procedures for bad weather, and Roane County Schools said its central office will be closed because of the weather conditions.
Standard and Poor’s Rating Services recently raised its rating on Oak Ridge’s electric system’s revenue debt one notch, from “A-” to “A.”
“This is very good news for the City of Oak Ridge,” City Manager Mark Watson said. “Bonds for the city’s electric utility systems were upgraded and recognized for the stable outlook observed during Standard and Poor’s normal review. A better bond rating will have a positive impact on lower interest rate considerations in the future, if needed.”
A grocery story and commercial store are being considered at two small sites on South Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike.
The unnamed grocery store could be built on a 2.3-acre parcel at the new Woodland Town Center, where Aubrey’s and Panera Bread recently opened. The store would be across from the two restaurants, on the other side of a new roadway called Woodland Terrace East.
The Joe L. Evins Federal Building in Oak Ridge, one of the U.S. Department of Energy sites to be guarded under a $182 million protective force services contract announced Thursday.
Federal officials announced Thursday that they have awarded a $182 million contract to protect U.S. Department of Energy sites in Oak Ridge, including the East Tennessee Technology Park, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Joe L. Evins Federal Building, and the rest of the Oak Ridge Reservation, not including the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The five-year contract was awarded to National Strategic Protective Services LLC, or NSPS.
“We are pleased to welcome NSPS as a part of the Department of Energy team in Oak Ridge,” said Larry Kelly, Oak Ridge Office manager. “We evaluated the proposals and it was clear to us that NSPS is the right company for this difficult and important job.”
NSPS will replace WSI Oak Ridge, which has provided protective force services in Oak Ridge since 2000.

The Clinton city schools may have been closed today but when they do re-open, students and staff will be protected by uniformed police officers.
In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting in December that left 20 elementary school students and six adults dead, school and city officials tried to find ways to protect children close to home.
The city and the school system are splitting the $50,000 cost for the officers through the end of the semester and will look for funding options when the budget process begins later this year to keep the officers there all the time.

Due to the resignation of Clinton School Board member R.C. Hutchins, an opening for a new school board member is currently available.
As a result of this vacancy, the Clinton Board of Education is requesting that interested candidates attend the board meeting on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the Clinton Municipal Building and bring a resume to share with the school board. All candidates will be given three minutes to address the board as to their qualifications and interest in serving.
