The Soccer Club of Oak Ridge is offering a soccer academy in March for boys and girls between 5 and 8 years old.
The academy includes eight weeks of training that starts March 19 at Katie Hunter Field in Oak Ridge.

One person was taken to an Oak Ridge hospital after a westbound car went down a 15-foot embankment and landed on its roof in heavy brush next to East Tri County Boulevard in Oliver Springs on Friday morning, authorities said.
Authorities aren’t releasing the name of the female driver or her condition, Oliver Springs Police Department Sgt. Kevin Armes said. She was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
State officials to honor former fire chief

Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett and Rep. John Ragan will be presenting the widow of former Medford Fire Chief Ronnie Braden with a plaque commemorating his service to the community at the Medford Volunteer Fire Department chili supper on Saturday.
The chili supper starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Clinch River Baptist Church at 407 Cane Creek Road.
‘Breakfast with the Legislators’ on Monday
This month’s “Breakfast with the Legislators” will be Monday morning at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
The hour-long breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. in the Oak Ridge Civic Center Social Room. A free, light continental breakfast will be served.
‘Operation Medicine Cabinet’ on Saturday

The Oak Ridge Police Department and Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention—or ASAP—of Anderson County will hold an “Operation Medicine Cabinet” event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Oak Ridge police station.
This is an opportunity to clean out your medicine cabinet to not only prevent the misuse of unused or unwanted drugs but also to make sure that those medications are properly disposed of and don’t end up in the community’s water supply. No questions will be asked and no names will be given.

Firefighters extinguish engine fire in Walmart parking lot
Firefighters extinguished an engine fire in the Walmart parking lot on Wednesday afternoon, an Oak Ridge Fire Department report said.
Firefighters responded to the fire at about 3:06 p.m. Wednesday. They reported a red Dodge pickup had flames coming from the engine compartment when they arrived.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, and the vehicle, which had been driven by Jerald Miller, was towed from the parking lot.
Father-daughter hike at UT Arboretum on Saturday

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society will have its 2013 Father-Daughter Hike on Saturday at the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge.
The hike starts at 9 a.m. Saturday in the UT Arboretum parking lot at 901 S. Illinois Ave.

Medicaid expansion discussed at next Interagency Coalition Meeting
A possible expansion of Medicaid will be discussed at an Anderson County Interagency Coalition meeting next week.
Representatives of all health and social service providers in Anderson County are invited to attend, a press release said.
The meeting will be held at the Anderson County Health Department from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Anderson mayor to address ‘false allegations’ on Monday

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank has called a Monday morning press conference to address what she has called “false allegations,” a Thursday afternoon press release said.
“During that time, Mayor Frank will address false allegations brought against her by county commissioners,” the release said. “No other information will be released prior to Monday’s press conference.”

The John Rice Irwin-Anderson County Chapter of Sons of the Revolution honored the county mayor earlier this month for her commitment to historic preservation, a press release said.
It said chapter members delivered a surprise token of appreciation at Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank’s office on Feb. 4.
Y-12 inventors receive awards
A dozen people were recognized for receiving U.S. Patent and Trademark Office patents during the ninth annual Y-12 Technology Transfer awards ceremony, held to celebrate fiscal year 2012 achievements, and 74 were honored for submitting invention disclosures.
The year was a record-breaking one for new patents at Y‑12, with 11 awarded. The Silver Acorn Award, bestowed upon first-time patent recipients, went to Ed Babelay, Bill Barkman, Amy DeMint, Jackie Gooch, Patrick Thomas, and Paul Vanatta.
UT’s Joan Cronan to give keynote address at federal women workshop

Joan Cronan, University of Tennessee women’s athletic director emeritus and consultant and adviser to the chancellor, will be the keynote speaker at a women’s workshop in March.
The 2013 Oak Ridge Women’s Workshop is co-sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Federal Women’s Program and the Federally Employed Women Oak Ridge Chapter.
