UCOR, the U.S. Department of Energy’s cleanup contractor in Oak Ridge, has announced the winners of an education “mini-grant” program.
The UCOR Mini-Grant Program was created to recognize and support excellence in teaching by providing funds to assist teachers for certain projects or curricula. This focus is primarily on science, technology, engineering, and math.

A store that sells shaved ice on North Illinois Avenue got a business boost Wednesday when an Oak Ridge “cash mob” stopped by to buy cold, fruit-flavored drinks.
The cash mob shopped at Atomic Shaved Ice as part of a weekly mission to promote Oak Ridge companies.
“It puts the focus on local businesses to show that they’re here and to remind people to shop the ‘moms and pops,'” organizer Kay Williamson said.
The Tennessee Small Business Development Center will be hosting a start-up seminar on Wednesday, June 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce.
The seminar discussion includes the forms of business organization, tax requirements, business licenses, business planning and financing options,including SBA loan guarantees.

Health by Design offers chiropractic care and trigger point therapy, owner and doctor Caleb Runne said Monday.

Fox Brothers Ace Hardware is now open on Oak Ridge Turnpike, and the new store sells a mix of hardware, paint, tools, animal feed, electrical and plumbing supplies, and lawn and garden gear.
The 7,000-square-foot store is located in the east building at the former Paul Benton Buick and GMC.
“We’re excited, and we think it has a lot of potential,” said Bruce Fox, one of the new store’s four owners. The other three owners are his wife, Mary Jane Fox, and two brothers, Terry Fox and Todd Fox.
IMPACT Services Inc., a company that processes low-level radioactive waste in west Oak Ridge, has filed for bankruptcy, Tennessee officials said Friday morning.
The company has about one million pounds of waste at East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site. State officials said workers are at the site to ensure the materials are safe.
“It should be reiterated that the material at the facility is secure and a radiation safety officer remains onsite,” said Meg Lockhart, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
Tennessee officials have received reports that IMPACT Services Inc. has closed its waste processing operation at Heritage Center, and state workers are at the site this week to ensure the low-level radioactive materials are safe.

Pat Kane, the two-time winner of the New York City’s Fleadh Cheoil National Festival of Irish Music, will be joining them. He has written many songs and knows many modern selections as well.
Kane has performed at previous St. Patrick’s Day parties at the Realty Center.
