Oak Ridge Symphony has free family concert this afternoon

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra has a free family concert at 3 p.m. today (Sunday) at Oak Ridge High School.

“Hop on the music train as we perform a family-friendly concert ranging from ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ to ‘Polar Express’ to Eduard Strauss’s ‘Bahn Frei (Fast Track!)’ polka,” the ORCMA website says. “Come early for pre-concert activities, and come dressed in your railroad finest to join our costume parade. Local food, music served at ‘Taste of Oak Ridge’ on Sept. 28

The flavors from some of Oak Ridge’s best restaurants and the sounds of local musicians will fill Jackson Square for the fifth annual “Taste of Oak Ridge” on Saturday, Sept. 28. The highly anticipated event will start at 4:30 p.m. and continue to 10 p.m.

While area restaurants will be able to showcase some of their finest food in small portions or ” tastes,” the community-focused event will raise money to benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge. The “tastes” from each vendor will cost $1 or $2 per item. Tickets will be available for purchase. Attendees can buy as many tickets as they want for $1 each. DiGregorio among featured storytellers at student writers gala

Judy DiGregorio of Oak Ridge will be one of the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala on Sept. 14 in Kingston.

Local humorist Judy DiGregorio, along with Elizabeth Rose and Bill Landry, will be among the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala sponsored by the Roane County Writers group from 5 to 8 pm Saturday, Sept. 14, at the historic Roane County Courthouse in Kingston.

The fundraiser is for scholarships and the annual Student Writing Contest. The Gala will feature a wine and cheese bar, fire-seared Asian cuisine from WokChow, music by Jeff Nelson and the Sunshine Station Band, and an art exhibition by the Arts Council of Roane County. Attendance is by invitation only and requires a minimum donation of $35. To request an invitation, email bjgillum@comcast.net or call (865) 354-8658 by Sept. 11.

 

Paranormal investigator to share career experiences at Roane State

Paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren will give a lecture at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the O’Brien Theatre at Roane State Community College in Harriman.

Warren will speak about the many hauntings that she and her late husband, Ed, investigated. The Warren’s most celebrated case involved their role as chief investigators of the haunting on Long Island, N.Y., that became the subject of a number one best-selling book and movie, “The Amityville Horror.”

Their most harrowing encounter in Harrisville, Pa., was recently depicted in the feature film “The Conjuring,” starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as the Warrens. [Read more…]

Drumming, spirituality workshop set for Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church

A drumming and spirituality workshop has been scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Drums will be available, or you can bring your own. The workshop will be led by Matt Meyer, and it starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

The workshop is open to people of all skill levels, and it will include instruction on basic techniques, as well as information on the origins of percussion instruments from around the world, a press release said. Participants will also experience the spirituality of community music-making through stories, games, and discussions. [Read more…]

ORCMA opens season with ‘Double Dose of Awesomeness’ in October

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s 70th musical season, “Excellence to the Second Degree, Bringing you Music that Matters,” will offer Oak Ridgers performances from the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Series of concerts, and the Oak Ridge Chorus.

The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Dan Allcott, will open the season in October with “A Double Dose of Awesomeness” featuring music by Johannes Brahms with violinist Wei Tsun Chang and cellist Wesley Baldwin performing the Brahms’ Double Concerto. That performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the performing arts center at Oak Ridge High School. [Read more…]

Do you enjoy drawing upon your artistic skills as you sketch a face, animal, or scene? Then you might like “painting” pictures in chalk on a sidewalk.

You are invited to sign up as an artist for the 14th annual Oak Ridge Street Painting Festival. This popular event will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 (rain day on Sunday), on the sidewalks of the Oak Ridge Branch Campus of Roane State Community College. Artists may start their chalk paintings on Friday afternoon, Oct. 4.

The art must be completed at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, so it can be judged before 6 p.m., when artist awards will be announced. If you win a first prize or the People’s Choice Award, you will receive a $50 cash award as well as recognition. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Community Band has Labor Day concert

The Oak Ridge Community Band will performs its annual Labor Day concert on Monday, Sept. 2, at A.K. Bissell Park.

The free concert starts at 7 p.m. at the pavilion behind the Oak Ridge Civic Center. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, and refreshments will be available for sale, a press release said. [Read more…]
