Grammy-winning Oak Ridge bassist Edgar Meyer plays Saturday

Edgar Meyer, the world-renowned bassist and composer, will start this year’s ORCMA Chamber Music Season with a Saturday night performance.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
Meyer grew up in Oak Ridge, where he learned to play the double bass when he was five. He was taught by his father, the late Edgar Meyer Sr., who directed the string orchestra program for the Oak Ridge Schools. Meyer later went on to Indiana University to study with Stuart Sankey.
“Meyer is noted for achieving virtuosity on an instrument of unusual technical difficulty, and has performed music originally composed for other instruments, such as Bach’s unaccompanied cello suites, which he recorded,” a press release said. “He has also composed a number of classical works, including two double bass concertos, a string quintet, a double concerto for bass and cello, and a violin concerto.” [Read more…]

Despite the federal shutdown, the Museum of Appalachia near Norris is still open, and the 34th annual Tennessee Fall Homecoming is happening this weekend, officials said.
The Fall Homecoming is scheduled from Friday, Oct. 11, to Sunday, Oct. 13. It will feature more than 400 traditional musicians, singers, cloggers, and buck dancers, a press release said.
It said the three-day Homecoming is one of the nation’s largest, most authentic music and folk festivals.
“Each day, all day, musicians perform on five unique stages, filling the air with bluegrass, old-time, Southern gospel, and Americana music,” the release said. “Homecoming includes historic demonstrations of mountain skills, Revolutionary War and Civil War encampments, and a large arts and crafts fair featuring authentic Appalachian artisans. Pinto beans cooked over an open fire, home-made ice cream, Dutch oven cobbler, sassafras tea, and barbecue are some of the southern delicacies available for purchase.” [Read more…]

Community Band presents ‘Early Music’ concert on Oct. 13

The Oak Ridge Community Band will present an “Early Music” Concert on Oct. 13 at Oak Ridge High School.
The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. in the ORHS Performing Arts Center at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
This concert is the first of six indoor concerts in the “Music for a Lifetime” series scheduled for October, November, December, January, February, and April. These concerts will take the audience from early compositions up to the 1890s, then continue through the 20th century featuring the roaring ’20s, Big Band era on through the Nifty Fifties, Swinging Sixties, Generation X, and ending with music representing the New Millenium. Tennessee Mountain Writers presents ‘When the Byline Loses Its Thrill’

Cookeville freelance writer and newspaper columnist Jennie Ivey will conduct an all-day writing workshop on “When the Byline Loses Its Thrill: Making Money with the Words You Write” on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the United Way of Anderson County office at 161 Robertsville Road in Oak Ridge. The event is the Fall Workshop of the Tennessee Mountain Writers.
Workshop participants will learn how to focus on subjects they want to write about and tailor writing to fit markets that pay. They will also learn how to expand their reach and get paid to talk about the things they have written. Writers of all levels and all genres will benefit and are welcome.
Ivey is the co-author of three books: “Tennessee Tales the Textbooks Don’t Tell,” “E is for Elvis,” and “Soldiers, Spies, and Spartans: Civil War Stories from Tennessee.” She writes a weekly newspaper column for the Cookeville Herald-Citizen and is a regular contributor to Guideposts magazine and Chicken Soup for the Soul. She has taught at numerous writers’ conferences including the Tennessee Mountain Writers, Alabama Writers Conclave, Cookeville Creative Writers Association, and MTSU Writers Loft. [Read more…]

Anyone 50 and older is invited to ballroom dancing lessons at the Oak Ridge Senior Center starting Thursday, a press release said.
“Ballroom dancing is not only a wonderful social skill to have but also a great fun way to exercise for all ages,” the press release said.
Lessons will be on Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for beginner levels and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for intermediate levels. The lessons will begin Oct. 3 and will be led by Richard Pierce. The cost is a $5 donation per lesson, and no contracts or commitments are required.

The 13th Annual Clinch River Antiques Festival kicks off on Friday evening, Oct. 11, from 6–9 p.m. in Historic Downtown Clinton with shops open late, food vendors, carriage rides, and live entertainment.
The entertainment starts Friday evening in Hoskins Lane Park on Market Street with The Real McCoys, a bluegrass band that grew up playing music together in Lake City. Work by Roane State art professor selected for exhibition on Hilton Head Island

A work by Roane State Community College associate professor of art Bryan Wilkerson has been selected for exhibition during the renowned Public Art Exhibition on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Wilkerson’s entry, “Faux Rest,” will be on exhibit through Dec. 31 at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Twenty outdoor sculptures were chosen from more than 500 submissions for the Public Art Exhibition, presented by the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry.
A nationally recognized jury will review the pieces and select one for purchase to be installed on Hilton Head Island. [Read more…]
Gem hunter brings Smithsonian style exhibit to Karen’s Jewelers
Karen’s Jewelers will host a Smithsonian style exhibit of gems and jewelry from Central Asia and Australia Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 2-4, when adventurer Gary Bowersox brings his collection of more than 60,000 gems to Oak Ridge.
Bowersox has hunted for gems this year in the mines of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka and India, as well as Australia. Among his finds are a rare 29 carat black opal from Lightening Ridge, Australia, and an 1,100 carat ruby from Tajikistan. Both will be on display at the gem show at Karen’s Jewelers, 1120 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The exhibit will be on display from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. each day. [Read more…]
