Grammy-winning guitar quartet to play Oak Ridge on Saturday

The Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will play Saturday evening at the New Hope Center in Oak Ridge.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the New Hope Center, which is on Scarboro Road near the front entrance to the Y-12 National Security Complex. It’s part of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Concert Series.
A press release said the guitarists consistently play to sold-out houses worldwide. [Read more…]
Children’s Museum Gala celebrates 1970s

The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will celebrate its origins in the 1970s when guests gather for the 40th Birthday Gala at the museum on Friday, Dec. 6. The theme will be “Rocketing through the 70s!” in honor of the March 11, 1973, birth of the museum and the Rocket Room play area that delights children of all ages.
Guests will hop aboard the “Soul Train,” with the museum decked out as Knoxville’s Southern Terminal, as they enjoy the folk, rock, and pop culture of the 1970s.
Saxophone Jack and Friends will entertain guests with the music from the 1970s, and guests are invited to dress as their favorite characters of that era. Jack Furnari, also known as Saxophone Jack, has been in the Knoxville and East Tennessee music scene for more than 30 years. [Read more…]
Children’s Museum reopens Waterworks Exhibit

Children are once again splashing water as they send wooden tugboats down river in the TVA Waterworks Exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. The exhibit recently reopened with some new additions that highlight learning through play.
In addition to operating small locks and dams in a flume donated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, children now may climb aboard a child-sized tugboat for an imaginary trip down the Tennessee River. After boarding, children may walk around the deck before entering the pilot house and crews’ quarters of the red, white, and blue tugboat, a small-scale replica of Ingram Marine Group’s working tugboats. ORHS Masquers present ‘Emma,’ company’s first English comedy

The Oak Ridge High School Masquers will present “Emma,” a play adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma,” a beloved British novel published in 1815. Emma is the company’s first English comedy.
The play presents the story of Emma Woodhouse, a mischievous young woman bent on matchmaking whose efforts backfire when she sets her mind to finding a husband for her friend, Harriet Smith. Junior Meghanne Hill plays the starring role and senior Mackensie Russell will play Jane Austen herself, who comes alive as the narrator of the onstage version of the story.
“My favorite part of this production is that I’m finally getting to prove myself as an actor with as challenging a role as Jane Austen,” Russell said. “It’s hard to make a narrator a noticeable character.” [Read more…]

Clinton Library has classical guitar concert Monday
Join the Friends of the Clinton Public Library as they host Jeff Bianchi to perform an hour-long classical guitar concert at 6 p.m. Monday.
The date is part of Bianchi’s fall performance schedule, which includes concerts in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio.
Bianchi’s skill has earned him performances at the Rantucci International Guitar Festival, the Ithaca Guitar Festival, and a special concert in conjunction with the National Old Time Fiddlers’ Competition, a press release said. [Read more…]
Grace Lutheran has Reach Out Music Festival on Sunday

Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge has its 8th annual Reach Out Music Festival on Sunday.
The community is invited to enjoy the 3 p.m. concert at the church, which is located at 131 West Gettysburg Ave., a press release said. The festival will feature local bluegrass and Americana group, the Ridge City Ramblers, who have been picking together since 2010.
Two choirs will also be performing: Grace Lutheran under the direction of Paula Smith, and Church of the Resurrection under the direction of Ruben Weaver. Audience participation is encouraged, but not required, the release said. [Read more…]
Oak Ridge Chorus has All Saints Day concert tonight

The Oak Ridge Chorus has an All Saints Day concert at 7:30 pm today (Saturday) at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.
It’s a special concert under the direction of new conductor Seth Maples. Musical selections include “Where Your Bare Foot Walks” by David Childs, “When I Hear Music” by Michael Martin, “Battle Hymn of the Republic” by Peter Wilhousky, and “Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal,” arranged by Alice Parker.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for young adults and youth. [Read more…]

Camera Club: Get your prints ready this week

It is fall, and it is time to enter your best prints in the big show sponsored by the Camera Club of Oak Ridge. Amateur and professional photographers throughout East Tennessee should bring their mounted color or black and white images to the New Hope Center at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge on Friday, Nov. 1, from noon until 5 p.m. or on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Images must be mounted on a 16” x 20” x 3/16” foam core board. Please read complete Salon rules on the cameraclubofoakridge.org website. Entry forms and labels to affix to the back of each photograph can also be found on the website.

The Knoxville Guitar Ensemble will present a free program of classical guitar music at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the New Hope Center.
Ensemble members David Hickman, Tyler Jordan, John Wade, Travis Halloway, and Andy LeGrand will play music from Spain, South America, and original compositions.
