Free screening of ‘Chasing Ice,’ global warming discussion on Wednesday
Volunteers will show an award-winning movie on global warming and its effects on the world’s glaciers in Oak Ridge on Wednesday evening.
The movie “Chasing Ice” was filmed by Jeff Balog, a photojournalist working for National Geographic, a press release said. It will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
Balog filmed the movie in the “stunningly beautiful and dangerously challenging Artic landscape, in search of the truth about global warming and its effects on the world’s glaciers,” the press release said. Released in 2012, “Chasing Ice” received the Excellence in Cinematography Award from the Sundance Film Festival.
“Ninety seven percent of scientists agree that manmade climate change is real, and is happening now,” the release said. “A majority of Americans accept the science of climate change, but many do not fully understand its impacts. Jeff Balog himself was once a skeptic, until he saw firsthand how the warming planet is losing ice, even in the planet’s most brutally cold lands.” [Read more…]
‘Messiah’ sing-along at ORUUC on Sunday, Dec. 8
The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is having its annual “Messiah” sing-along on Sunday, Dec. 8.
Under the direction of Sandy Wells, the sing-along will begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 8 in the church sanctuary, and it will last about one hour, a press release said. The concert will be presented by 30 area singers accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra.
Everyone is welcome, and music will be provided for early-arriving audience members. Admission is free. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Civic Ballet supports Second Harvest

In appreciation of the support from the East Tennessee community during the past 50 years, the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association was proud to give back with a promotion for Second Harvest during their recent “Nutcracker” performances. Patrons who donated five items for Second Harvest East Tennessee received special discounts on ticket prices.
A similar promotion with a local nonprofit agency that benefits lower income families in our area is planned for the spring production of “Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake” on April 5, 2014. More specific information will be posted at www.orcba.org as it becomes available.
ORCBA holds the longest continuously-standing dance charter in the state of Tennessee. The organization’s goal is to provide a clean, safe, fun, professional environment for dancers of all abilities and ages to perform before a live audience. ORCBA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Oak Ridge Playhouse welcomes back ‘Annie,’ this weekend through Dec. 8
“Little Orphan Annie” may have disappeared from the comic pages of American newspapers, much like newspapers themselves, but her spirited message of hope lives on thanks to Broadway and the beloved musical that bears her name. To kick off the holiday season, she returns to Oak Ridge Playhouse once again.
Boasting one of Broadway’s most memorable scores, including “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and the ever optimistic “Tomorrow,” the original Broadway production of Annie opened in 1977, winning Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Now produced all over the world, it is ranked among the top 20 longest running shows in Broadway history, and continues to be one of the most successful musicals ever. [Read more…]
ORCBA celebrates 50th season, Tchaikovsky
In recognition of its 50th season, the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association is celebrating Tchaikovsky, opening its season this weekend with the annual production of “The Nutcracker.”
The season will end in April with “Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake.”
The University of Tennessee Chamber Orchestra will perform The Nutcracker this weekend with ORCBA.

Ridge City Ramblers have CD release party on Wednesday

The Ridge City Ramblers will have a CD release party to celebrate their first CD from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Razzleberry’s Ice Cream Lab and Kitchen in Jackson Square.
“Ramblin’ on my mind” is the title of the band’s CD. The Ramblers draw their inspiration from bluegrass, blues, traditional, and Americana music, and the band’s musicians bring experience with a host of musical styles and performing groups.
An Oak Ridge band, the Ramblers will entertain the Razzleberry’s audience with songs from the CD and other selections. [Read more…]
Community Band concert at Grove Theater to feature early 20th century music
The Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble will present its next concert in the “Music for a Lifetime” series at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.
The concert program will feature “Early 20th Century Music” with tunes from the Golden Age, the Roaring ’20s, the ’30s, and from the Big Band era. These will include some blues by W.C. Handy, some Gershwin from “Porgy and Bess,” and big band music: “A String of Pearls,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Satin Doll,” and “Opus One.” Other songs on the program will be music from the “Grand Canyon Suite,” a John Philip Sousa march, and others. ORCMA holiday wreaths for sale through Wednesday
The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association is taking advance orders for holiday wreaths made from fresh evergreens.
A traditional symbol of the holiday season, the wreaths are made of Fraser Fir (Southern Balsam). Proceeds from the sale are used in ORCMA’s longstanding commitment to the funding of local music organizations.
The wreaths are made to order in sizes ranging from 14 inches to 32 inches and can be customized in larger sizes as wanted. Red or maroon velvet bows are also available by order. Prices for wreaths range from $17 to $30, and bows cost $7. [Read more…]
Sound Company celebrates ‘Greatest Hits’ this weekend

Sound Company, Oak Ridge’s Children’s Performing Choir, will present a unique choral performance entitled “Just Sing!” this weekend, a press release said.
The Saturday show features The Nashville Singers. It will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Grove Theater at High Places Church.
The Sunday show begins at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
