Alfred Williams, one of the Clinton 12 students who fought for the integration of Clinton High School in 1956, died Thursday, March 14. He was 83. His funeral is Saturday.

“On behalf of the Green McAdoo Cultural Organization, the City of Clinton, and the State of Tennessee, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Mr. Alfred Williams,” Green McAdoo Cultural Organization said in a statement. “Alfred passed away at The Waters Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility on March 14, 2019, surrounded by family. He was one of the Clinton 12 students that fought for the integration of Clinton High School in 1956, blazing a trail for all black students to achieve equal education under the law. He went on to work in the city school system and became one of the friendly faces of Clinton Elementary School and the ‘candy man’ until his retirement. He will be missed by family, friends, and all those blessed to know him.” [Read more…]

Faith & science lecture in April on archaeology of Israelite women

Were the women depicted in the Old Testament of the Holy Bible more than mothers of the children of Israel? Did they contribute to Israelite tribal survival by experimenting with food plants and seeds, shearing wool and weaving cloth, making pots and devising ways to cook, preserve, and store food? And what about their religious lives?

The second talk in the First Presbyterian–First United Methodist Church Faith-and-Science Lecture Series will be on “The Archaeology of Women in Ancient Israel.” The lecture will be presented by Erin Darby, associate professor of religious studies and co-director of the ‘Ayn Gharandal Archaeological Project at the University of Tennessee.

Darby will deliver her lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in the fellowship hall of the sanctuary building of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge at 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Refreshments will be served, a press release said. [Read more…]

Battle of the Badges blood drive is Friday

The Oak Ridge Police Department and Oak Ridge Fire Department will be competing on Friday as part of the Battle of the Badges MEDIC blood drive benefiting East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

The blood drive is scheduled for Friday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Civic Center, located at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Donations for Broc Selby, a Children’s Hospital patient and grandson of an ORPD officer, are still being accepted, a press release said. All other donations will directly benefit other children in medical need.

“Everyone is invited to support our local first responders in saving lives,” the press release said. All donors will receive a free T-shirt and restaurant coupon from MEDIC.

Tennessee Mountain Writers Conference is in Oak Ridge in April

Tennessee Mountain Writers will celebrate their 31st Annual Conference with the theme “Just Write” from Thursday, April 4, to Saturday, April 6.

The Oak Ridge League of Women Voters will host Breakfast with the Legislators on Monday, March 25. The meeting will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Social Room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike. A free continental breakfast will be served, a press release said.

Tennessee senators Randy McNally and Ken Yager and representatives John Ragan and Kent Calfee have been invited to speak about this session of the Tennessee General Assembly, and respond to questions and hear opinions from the audience, the press release said. The public is invited to attend.

Students in the Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Harriman built equipment to help train students taking Roane State’s chemical engineering technology courses.

They’ve made a pipe rack to be used as part of the program. With the pipe rack, “students will be able to set up elements of chemical processing equipment such as pumps, valves, pressure gauges and regulators, and observe how the equipment can be used to regulate flow and pressure,” said Markus Pomper, dean of Roane State’s Division of Mathematics and Science.

Established with the assistance of UCOR, CNS, Tate and Lyle, and additional partners, Roane State’s chemical engineering technology program trains students to work as chemical operators. A chemical operator monitors, controls, and troubleshoots automated chemical processes. [Read more…]

An information session about Roane State Community College’s new two-year Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering Technology will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the college’s Oak Ridge campus, which is at 701 Briarcliff Avenue.

Laura A. Hofman had been on the job for just over one month, and the phone in her office was ringing off the hook.

She oversees Roane State Community College’s new two-year Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering Technology. Prospective students are inquiring about the new program, which the Tennessee Board of Regents approved in December.

An information session about the new program will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the college’s Oak Ridge campus, 701 Briarcliff Avenue. Check-in will be held in the lobby of the Goff Health Sciences and Technology Building. [Read more…]

Anderson County Democrats to hold reorganization meeting

The Anderson County Democratic Party will hold a Biennial Reorganization Convention to elect new leaders on Saturday, March 30, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. Doors open for registration at 12:30 p.m., and the start time is 1 p.m., a press release said. Participants must be there by 1 p.m., or participation will not be allowed. Lunch and beverages will be provided, the press release said.

Local Democrats will elect a new chair, vice chairs, secretary, treasurer, and the Executive Committee for Anderson County to a two-year term. All Democratic residents who are eligible voters of Anderson County are urged to attend to discuss the party’s agenda and events for 2019-20, the press release said.

About the reorganization, Chair Megan McNees said: “The party reorganization is a vital part of the county party system. It provides our membership with the chance to voice their opinions and to have them be heard. These elections will have a direct impact on party governance and by extension the 2020 elections. Now, more than ever, it’s so important to be active in your government. It’s every citizen’s duty to pay attention and get involved. Attending our reorganization is an easy first step.”

During the reorganization, attendees will evaluate the effectiveness of their county party’s bylaws and leadership, the press release said. Each county party determines its own needs, elects new leaders, and enacts reforms to build a stronger grassroots organization, the release said.

Anderson County Republicans to elect officers Thursday

The Anderson County Republican Party will elect officers of its Executive Committee on Thursday. The public is invited to attend, a press release said.

Elections will be held for the following positions: chair, vice chair, treasurer, vice treasurer, and secretary, the press release said.

The elections will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday March 21, in Room 313 of the Anderson County Courthouse at 100 North Main Street in Clinton.

ORCSGirls joins attempt to set world record for number of girls coding

Oak Ridge Computer Science Girls (ORCSGirls) is joining the TechGirlz code breakers event on March 30 to set the world record for the number of girls coding.

ORCSGirls will be running events on March 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at two locations: Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge and at the Blount County Public Library in Maryville. Both workshops will teach participating middle school girls the basics of website development, a press release said.

During the workshop, girls from around the country will be connected through video chat to set this world record. [Read more…]
