City has lifeguarding course in October

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is conducting the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course in October. Classes will be held during Oak Ridge schools fall break Oct. 14-18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Successful completion of this course qualifies students who are 16 and up to apply for a lifeguard position with the City of Oak Ridge. Attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Successful completion of the class will provide the student with Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid Certification. [Read more…]

A radiation oncologist and medical director for the Provision Center for Proton Therapy will be the featured speaker at a quarterly networking luncheon for the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce next week.

The speaker will be Dr. Marcio Fagundes.

UT Arboretum Society has two wildflower walks Saturday

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society has two wildflower walks on Saturday, one at 10 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m.

Due to the popularity of the walks in past years, the Arboretum Society will offer a morning walk with Kris Light and an afternoon walk with Charlie Samuels, a press release said. Heritage Center Greenway area certified by National Wildlife Federation

A greenway area at Heritage Center, the former K-25 site, has been designated as a certified wildlife habitat site by the National Wildlife Federation.

The 26-acre area is part of the Heritage Center Greenway, which includes trails, ponds, and close-by rivers, a press release said. The greenway provides public access to meadow and wildlife habitat areas that allow viewing of more than 200 species of birds and water fowl, including nesting pairs of bald eagles and osprey. ORAU awards $39,000 in education grants to East Tennessee schools

Oak Ridge Associated Universities awarded more than $39,000 to more than two dozen teachers in 17 schools in Oak Ridge, Clinton, Norris, and Anderson County in a recent grants ceremony.

It was the 12th annual ORAU Education Grants ceremony, and 27 teachers received awards, a press release said.

The grant money can be used to buy educational materials and equipment such as microscopes, iPads, robotics kits, and computers that will help teachers “continue to meet rigorous, state-wide curriculum standards and enhance the learning experience of their students,” the release said. [Read more…]

Anderson committee to consider single courthouse entrance

An Anderson County committee is scheduled to consider a recommendation on Wednesday to close all but one entrance to the county courthouse in Clinton.

That move has been recommended by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department deputy in charge of courthouse security. ACSD Cpl. John McCulley wrote in a memo to the committee that limiting access to the courthouse to only one entrance and one exit will “better protect the courts and the citizens of Anderson County.” [Read more…]

October Sky Festival coming to Oliver Springs

The Oliver Springs Historical Society will kick off this year’s October Sky Festival and Heritage at the Depot with a “Miss October Sky Pageant.” The Pageant will take place on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., and it will be held at the Kellytown Baptist Church Activity Building in Oliver Springs.

Judy DiGregorio of Oak Ridge will be one of the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala on Sept. 14 in Kingston.

Local humorist Judy DiGregorio, along with Elizabeth Rose and Bill Landry, will be among the featured storytellers at the Student Writers Membership Gala sponsored by the Roane County Writers group from 5 to 8 pm Saturday, Sept. 14, at the historic Roane County Courthouse in Kingston.

The fundraiser is for scholarships and the annual Student Writing Contest. The Gala will feature a wine and cheese bar, fire-seared Asian cuisine from WokChow, music by Jeff Nelson and the Sunshine Station Band, and an art exhibition by the Arts Council of Roane County.
