Louie is an adorable male Beagle mix who came into the shelter on August 23. On stray hold till the 29th. He’s sweet, happy, and ready for a new home!

Mary Tuskan, counselor at Clinton High School, was chosen from a large number of qualified applicants as the SADD National Advisor of the Year, a press release said.
SADD President and Chief Executive Officer Penny Wells said that Tuskan, through her work at Clinton High School, has “exemplified our idea of a successful SADD advisor,” the press release said.
It said Tuskan led the members of the SADD chapter and Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Anderson County Youth Coalition to CHS’s repeat victory in this past January’s Red Ribbon Rivalry and continues to support the students in their efforts such as the “Will you stay sober with me?” prom campaign.
Anderson County Director of Schools Larry Foster said: “We were very pleased to hear the news of Ms. Tuskan being named National SADD Advisor of the Year. She is very deserving of such an honor. She has worked extremely hard with our students in Anderson County. Her commitment and dedication to substance abuse prevention is outstanding and she is always giving of her time. Church Women United resumes its lunchtime series of programs on Friday, September 5, with a book review of “Year of Plenty” by Craig L. Goodwin. The program will be held in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The hall is most easily accessed from the Vienna Road entrance.
Fellowship begins at 11:30 a.m. with refreshments, followed by a brief meeting and program at noon. The public is welcome to attend, a press release said.
Church Women United is a national volunteer ecumenical women’s movement that brings together women of diverse races, cultures, and traditions in closer Christian fellowship, prayer, advocacy, and action for peace with justice in the world. Warren Gooch is running for Oak Ridge City Council in the November 4 election.
Gooch is a partner in the law firm of Kramer Rayson LLP, which has offices in Oak Ridge and Knoxville. He has been recognized as a leading health care lawyer by national and regional publications, including the 2015 edition of “The Best Lawyers in America,” a press release said.

Proceeds from a Rock and Root 30K at Haw Ridge on Saturday will be donated to Friends of Haw Ridge, a press release said.
The 30K is the first big event for Peak Mountain Sports LLC. It’s the company’s premier trail race this year, the press release said.
“A 30K trail running race—the Rock and Root 30K is an epic adventure of trail running that recreational athletes, elite runners, and everyone in between will not want to miss,” the release said. “Using the technical and hilly terrain of Haw Ridge Park in Oak Ridge, runners will conquer a wild journey through single track trails of short steep climbs, and breathtaking lakeside views.”
The release said the course is a challenging two-lap loop course that will consist of meandering “rock and root” trails that traverse in and around the 780-acre park. [Read more…]
First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge will simulcast well-known Bible teacher and best-selling author Beth Moore live from Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 13, for the Oak Ridge area.
An estimated 250,000 women around the world are expected to participate in this live Internet streaming event, which will feature Moore’s dynamic storytelling and passionate Bible teaching in a down-to-earth style that is relevant to women’s lives, a press release said.
Moore has authored dozens of Bible studies, books, and devotionals specifically for women for nearly two decades. Moore’s organization, Living Proof Ministries, is based out of Houston.
“We want to welcome all women in the Oak Ridge area, no matter your faith background, to this free simulcast,” said the Rev. Marquette Road between Lafayette Drive and North Purdue Avenue in the Woodland neighborhood will be closed during the week of September 8 for rehabilitation work on the city’s sewer system.
Oak Ridge officials expect the work to be done by September 12. It’s being done by Portland Construction Inc. under a contract with the Oak Ridge Public Works Department. The contractor is providing rehabilitation work on the city’s gravity wastewater collection system, a press release said.
The temporary road closure on Marquette Road between Lafayette Drive and North Purdue Avenue will allow Portland Construction to lay pump hoses across the closed portion of the road, the press release said. Access to parking at the First Baptist Church located at 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike will be maintained, and Gettysburg Avenue may be used as a detour. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers will host a Technology Town Hall on September 30.
The town hall will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 30, in the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.
“Oak Ridge Schools would like to invite all community members, parents, and students to attend,” a press release said.
The town hall will include a presentation by Borchers, followed by a question-and-answer forum.
The release said Borchers’ short presentation will discuss the benefits of Oak Ridge Schools launching a Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD, platform starting the second nine weeks of school, on October 20, and the future of Oak Ridge Schools’ technology plan with a continued move towards integrating 1:1 (district-purchased devices for all students). The Tennessee Small Business Development Center will have two free government contracting seminars on September 16.
The first is scheduled from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday, September 16, at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. During that seminar, the TSBDC at Roane State Community College, in partnership with the University of Tennessee, CIS-PTAC, will offer a free workshop for small businesses on the basics of government contracting.

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms will move across the Cumberland Plateau and into East Tennessee and southwest Virginia this evening, forecasters said Tuesday.
The biggest risk from the storms is damaging straight-line winds of up to 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown.
“Locally heavy rainfall and frequent lightning will also be possible with the strongest activity,” the NWS said.
The Weather Service issued a significant weather advisory at 7:09 p.m. for Anderson and Union counties and southern Campbell, central Morgan, and southeastern Scott counties until 8 p.m. [Read more…]
CLINTON—Members of the Anderson County Commission, during their regular meeting on Aug. 18, approved a resolution that will allow citizens to hunt deer on the county-owned former Blockhouse Valley Landfill site.
Deer hunting will be limited to the former landfill site and restricted to permitted individuals, a press release said.
Citizens interested in obtaining permits for the hunt must submit their applications and requests by calling (865) 457-6201 by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
A lottery drawing will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, in Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank’s office, located in Suite 208 at the Anderson County Courthouse at 100 North Main Street in Clinton.
