A free workshop on accounting for small businesses is being offered Friday, June 26.
The workshop is for small businesses, and it’s being offered by the Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Roane State Community College, in partnership with Pugh CPAs.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said an Andersonville woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Union County early Sunday morning.
According to the THP, Amanda Blevins, 32, had been headed east on Sharps Chapel Road near Brewer Hollow Road shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday when her 2002 Volkswagen Beetle ran off the right side of the road, went into a ditch, and collided with a large boulder.
Blevins, who was not wearing her seatbelt, died in the accident. No other vehicles were involved, and Blevins was the lone occupant of the car.

According to the Norris Bulletin, Governor Bill Haslam will be in Norris on Friday to announce that the city has been awarded a $347,000 grant by the Tennessee Department of Transportation to build a new sidewalk along East Norris from Dairy Pond Road to the intersection with Highway 61.
The grant will also provide financing for a new crosswalk that will permit easier pedestrian traffic and easier access to the existing retail shops on the other side of the highway.
Officials told the Bulletin that a significant amount of preliminary engineering and design work will be required before construction on the project can begin and said it is likely that no actual work would begin for at least a year. [Read more…]

The Anderson County Commission approved a measure Monday night that knocks down one more hurdle in senior citizens’ quest for a new senior center.
Commissioners voted unanimously to ask Mayor Terry Frank to formally request, in writing, that ETHRA voluntarily end its contract to operate the Office on Aging and instead cede control to the county. That, coupled with the formality of submitting a request for proposals—or RFP—for vendors with a possible site, means that the Office on Aging is indeed one step closer to moving into a new and larger building.
Currently, they have an offer for a lease on a building on South Seivers Boulevard in the heart of Clinton to serve as a new senior center and all indications are that once the bureaucratic hurdles are cleared, they could begin moving in by the end of this summer. [Read more…]
The Lavender Festival will celebrate “all things herbal” in Jackson Square on Saturday.
The 17th annual festival is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. There is no cost to attend.
“Jackson Square has been under renovations since January, but they are expected to be finished in time for the festival, which will go on as planned,” organizers said.
They said free parking is available in surrounding city and business lots, and on side streets.
The Lavender Festival focuses on herbs, health, gardening, and cooking, and it features more than 100 vendors, a dozen herb and health presentations, children’s activities, and many musicians. Vendors will line the covered walkways of Jackson Square, the parking lot, and both sides of Broadway Avenue, which will be closed to traffic. [Read more…]
The 2020 Planning Committee for Oak Ridge Schools will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, in the School Administration Building conference room.
The board is reviewing “where we are in the planning process and developing a strategy for our next actions,” the agenda said.
“The Oak Ridge School District is committed to providing its students many opportunities and experiences through which to become aware of, explore, and plan for college and career,” a meeting notice said. “In order to define our focus over the next five years, we are creating a five-year plan to be delivered to the Board of Education for consideration. Representatives from the business and industry community, parents, students, school staff, and board members have been selected to have an opportunity to provide input and serve on this committee.”

Cathy Ginel
Teachers in Oak Ridge and Clinton have been selected to serve on the first Governor’s Teacher Cabinet.
The Oak Ridge teacher, Cathy Ginel, is a seventh-grade science teacher at Robertsville Middle School. The Clinton teacher, Abbey Kidwell, is a fourth-grade teacher at South Clinton Elementary School.
Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam announced the appointment of the 18 teachers to the cabinet on Tuesday.
The cabinet will meet quarterly with Haslam and Education Commissioner Candice McQueen to share real-time information from the classroom, give advice on policy considerations, and provide a direct line of communication to schools and communities, a press release said. [Read more…]
Bill S. Denton, 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2015, in Nashville. He was born in Celina, Tennessee, and spent his adult life in Oak Ridge.
Prior to moving to Oak Ridge to begin his long career as a professional engineer, he served in both World War II and the Korean conflict. He then happily spent over 40 years working at X-10, Y-12, and K-25 and continued working another 10 years using his vast experience as an independent contractor where his travels included Portsmouth, Ohio, and Rocky Flats, Colorado. He loved his work and took great pride in doing the job right.

Kenneth Stuart Bartley
The aggravated robbery warrant against Kenneth Stuart Bartley has been recalled and dismissed, authorities said.
Bartley, 23, had been identified as a suspect in a Sunday morning robbery in Anderson County. The alleged robbery occurred shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, June 14, at the Marathon Station on Lake City Highway near Rocky Top (the former Lake City).
But authorities said Bartley was located in Vienna, Virginia, on Sunday night, and his family said he had been in Virginia.
On Sunday evening, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said its investigators would travel to Vienna to interview Bartley and work with Virginia authorities to determine if “Bartley was indeed in Virginia at the time of (the Sunday morning) robbery.” [Read more…]
Clinton Police Department detectives have arrested a Knoxville man, 37-year-old Wallace Wade Tidwell, in connection with a weekend convenience store robbery, authorities said.
Reports indicate that a clerk at the Clinton BP at 2228 North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard flagged down a patrol car at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday and told the officer she had just been robbed, the CPD said in a release. The clerk said a white male went into the restroom of the store, and when he came out, he walked up to the cash register and demanded all the money, the release said. [Read more…]
An emergency exercise will be conducted at the East Tennessee Technology Park in west Oak Ridge beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16.
The emergency exercise is being conducted by URS-CH2M Oak Ridge, LLC, or UCOR.
The exercise, which should conclude no later than 1 p.m., is being conducted in coordination with the U.S. Department of Energy and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, a press release said. It will involve participants from multiple state agencies; the city of Oak Ridge; and Anderson, Knox, Loudon, and Roane counties. [Read more…]

A Waste Connections truck overturned on Tri County Boulevard at Windrock Road at about 6:30 a.m. Monday, authorities said.
Oliver Springs Police Chief Kenneth Morgan said the driver, Timothy Goodale, was taken to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge with minor injuries.
Approximately 35 to 40 gallons of diesel fuel leaked onto the ground from the loaded truck, with some flowing into Indian Creek, Morgan said. Cleanup was provided by Waste Connections and performed by Hepco.
The Oliver Springs Police Department responded to the crash, and the Oak Ridge Fire Department HazMat team was called to help the Oliver Springs Fire Department.
