Carol Ann Luethke, age 40, of Oak Ridge, died suddenly Monday, June 18, 2012, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.
She was born January 13, 1972, in Oak Ridge.

July 4 fireworks at A.K. Bissell Park
The July 4 fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m. Independence Day at A.K. Bissell Park, Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley announced Monday.
Radio host Jack Ryan from Merle 96.7 will broadcast live from the park beginning at 6 p.m. and will end his broadcast with a patriotic musical medley as the fireworks are shot. Listeners can tune their radios to 96.7 Merle FM and enjoy the fireworks.
Before the fireworks begin, the Oak Ridge Community Band will play its annual Fourth of July concert at the park’s pavilion starting at 7:30 p.m.
Vanderbilt ‘whistle-blower’ to lecture in Oak Ridge on Friday
A Vanderbilt University professor who is well-known for “blowing the whistle” on the school’s efforts to force Christian organizations off-campus will be the guest speaker at a Friday lecture hosted by state Rep. John Ragan, a campaign press release said.
The lecture by Carol Swain is at 7 p.m. at the Pollard Center Auditorium.
New federal office oversees Y-12, Pantex work
A new federal office has been created to oversee nuclear production work at the Pantex Site in Amarillo, Texas, and the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.
The new office is called the National Nuclear Security Administration Production Office. Its mission includes contract management and oversight of work to maintain the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile, provide enriched uranium, and support activities that reduce the global nuclear threat, according to an NNSA press release.
Urban forestry, tree survey discussed Thursday
A University of Tennessee assistant professor will lead a discussion on urban forestry and a potential Oak Ridge tree survey on Thursday.
The talk starts at 7 p.m. at Roane State Community College in Oak Ridge and features Sharon Jean-Philippe, an assistant urban forestry professor and member of the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council.
Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge this past weekend

The 14th annual Lavender Festival in historic Jackson Square was in Oak Ridge this past weekend.
There were many repeat vendors, such as Erin’s Meadow Herb Farm and Heaven Scent, as well as musical performances and food. Performers included Allen McBride, Liz and Tim, and Frost Bottom Boys.
Secret City Festival begins today
The Secret City Festival begins today at 11:30 a.m. and goes through 7 p.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
It features children’s activities, a youth area, music, food, history exhibits, bus tours, arts and crafts, and a World War II re-enactment.
Lavender Festival at Jackson Square this weekend
The 14th annual Lavender Festival in historic Jackson Square is happening this Friday and Saturday, and it features herbs, music, food and crafts.
There will also be demonstrations, such as information about growing your own lavender, “Herbs for Radiant Skin,” and learning about extracting botanical waters.
DOE facility disposes of 1.4 million tons of waste

After 10 years of operation, the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility has safely disposed of 1.45 million tons of waste from cleanup projects across the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Reservation, a press release said.
The waste management facility, which is located near the Y-12 National Security Complex, began operating in May 2002. It accepts a variety of wastes, including soil, sludge, sediments, vegetation, personal protective equipment, and scrap equipment.
Small business workshop on June 27
The Tennessee Small Business Development Center is having a free workshop for small business owners and entrepreneurs on Wednesday, June 27, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This workshop, in partnership with the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, is designed for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of starting a new business.
‘Life of a Secret City Kid’ book for sale at Secret City Festival

Don Bell, a local author and musician, will have his book, “Life of a Secret City Kid,” for sale at the Secret City Festival on Saturday at the Secret City Kid’s booth. The cost of the book is $10.
The book is from a compilation of articles that Bell wrote starting in 2008 for The Oak Ridger and Oak Ridge Observer. Gayla Turner Bailey helped put the book together, and Clifford Smith drew the cover.
Young Professionals has June 23 business ‘cash mob’
Young Professionals of Oak Ridge has organized a cash mob on June 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The two featured businesses are J&M Butcher Shop and Mickey’s Produce.
