Guest column: Anderson mayor’s budget includes no tax increase

CLINTON—Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank has presented her administration’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Frank’s proposed general fund budget, as recently presented to the Budget Committee, keeps most county departments at current-year spending levels and includes no tax increase. It was unanimously approved at a May 15 budget meeting.

The balanced $25,010,105 budget for the county’s general operating fund proposes maintaining a focus on stabilizing spending levels until we have full economic recovery. [Read more…]

Anderson County Commission approves deer hunting at former landfill site

CLINTON—Members of the Anderson County Commission, during their quarterly day meeting on Monday, approved a resolution that will allow citizens to hunt deer on the county-owned former Blockhouse Valley Landfill site.

Deer hunting will be limited to the former landfill site and restricted to permitted individuals.

Citizens interested in obtaining permits for the hunt must submit their applications and requests by calling (865) 457-6291 by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6. [Read more…]

Anderson County Accounts and Budget Office receives award

Anderson County government recently announced that its Accounts and Budget Office has received the Popular Annual Financial Report Award, or PAFR Award.

The PAFR Report is a voluntary report that counties can choose to compile and publish in order to condense the financial position of the county. The goal of popular reports is to present budget information in a way that is easy to understand, a press release said.

“We scored an 86.7 percent out of 100 percent by the panel of 3 judges,” Anderson County Deputy Budget Director Connie Aytes said. “One judge gave us a 96.8 percent grade. I am honored to say this now makes the 11th consecutive year we’ve won the award.” [Read more…]

Anderson County Solid Waste recognizes logo contest winner

CLINTON—The Anderson County Solid Waste Department recently honored the nine-year-old winner of the contest to create a new logo for the department.

Toby Graham, a student at Anderson County’s Fairview Elementary School, was deemed the winner of the recent contest. His logo design, which the county plans to digitally convert for use on the Internet, features a drawing of the Earth, surrounded by various phrases and symbols related to litter and “being green.” [Read more…]

Guest column: Anderson County officials present budget highlights

As Anderson County government begins the budget process for the 2013/2014 county budget, we wanted to share with the citizens, elected officials, county employees, and all interested parties some of the challenges and opportunities that we face in presenting our County Commission with a balanced, no-tax-increase budget while still providing core services.

Upon first request from all departments, the county’s general fund budget is out of balance by more than $4 million, expenditures over revenues.

Revenues are initially projected at 98 percent of our current year levels. Property assessments (growth) have a slight increase, while things like sales tax and business tax are projected to be down to some extent. While the county’s general fund is not heavily dependent upon federal revenue, budget woes at the federal level have caused concern about some of the revenues that we do receive. [Read more…]
