Organizational meeting on Feb. 21 for Oak Ridge summer softball

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will have an organizational meeting this month for teams interested in playing in the city-sponsored summer softball leagues.

Family Day at Civic Center Feb. 23

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will host a Family Day at the Civic Center on Feb. 23.

The new event will include games, activities, a chili cook-off, and free swim assessments for children, a press release said.

The Family Day is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Feb. 23, and adult volunteers are needed to help with the event, the city press release said.

Recreation and Parks Department Online Guide

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department welcomes you to flip through a new online guide. The guide, which is powered by Calameo, highlights key information about the Recreation and Parks Department programs, hours of operation, parks, facilities, and events. New fees for 2013 are also highlighted on the guide.

To view the free guide, visit www.orrecparks.org and simply click on the guide at the top of the home page. The guide is easily viewed on a tablet, smart phone, or on your personal computer.

Oak Ridge recycles Christmas trees in January

Oak Ridge is sponsoring a Christmas tree recycling event on Saturday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 12.

Trees can be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the parking lot at Big Turtle Park off Monterey Road.

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board is seeking vendors for a Summer Jobs and Career Fair for Teens in February.

The jobs and careers fair will be from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Oak Ridge High School Café.

It will introduce students to possible summer job opportunities, future careers, and to potential colleges as well, a press release said. It will also serve as an excellent opportunity for vendors to meet potential employees.

Recreation and Parks Department selling gift certificates for swimming

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is selling gift certificates for 2013 swimming programs. Summer season passes, books of tickets, and swim lessons gift certificates are available at the 2012 rate until Jan. 1.

Certificates may be purchased at the Oak Ridge Civic Center front desk. The Recreation and Parks Department fee schedule will change Jan. 1, a press release said. For complete information on the new fee structure, visit www.orrecparks.org.

Oak Ridge, Woman’s Club light Christmas tree

Oak Ridge Christmas Tree Lighting

The Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department had the annual Christmas tree lighting at A.K. Bissell Park on Friday night.

Several hundred people attended the annual Christmas tree lighting and concert at A.K. Bissell Park and Civic Center on Friday night.

It was sponsored by the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department.

Entertainment after the tree lighting included music by the Jefferson Middle School Orchestra, a Linden Elementary School chorus, and the Oak Ridge Community Band.

The class will meet:

  • Thursday, Dec. 13 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Monday–Wednesday, Dec. 17-19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27 and 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Christmas tree lighting at Civic Center on Dec. 7

The Oak Ridge Woman’s Club and the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will sponsor the annual Christmas tree lighting and reception on Friday, Dec. 7.

The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Secret City Commemorative Walk on the east side of the Oak Ridge Library parking lot.

A reception will follow in the Oak Ridge Civic Center gymnasium. Participants will enjoy refreshments and seasonal music, a press release said. The entertainment will include the Jefferson Middle School Orchestra, a Linden Elementary School chorus, and the Oak ridge Community Band.

Oak Ridge Fireballs win dodgeball tournament

The Oak Ridge Youth Advisory Board hosted a Youth Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 10. After three rounds of pool play, the Oak Ridge Fireballs faced off against Evan’s Shadow in the championship match, with the Fireballs winning 3-1.

It’s one of several events the Youth Advisory Board has scheduled this year. The board is co-hosting a Breakfast with Santa at Grove Theater on Dec. 1, and reservations are now available.
