Kiwanis Club talk to focus on Revolutionary War, Day One: Paul Revere, Lexington, Concord

A Tuesday evening program with the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge will focus on the Revolutionary War, Day One. Topics to be included are the day that started the seven-year Revolutionary War, minute by minute: Paul Revere’s ride, lanterns displayed in Boston’s North Church, the British march to Lexington and Concord, and the battle at Lexington Green and Concord’s North Bridge.

The talk will feature Don Edmands, president of the Madisonville Kiwanis Club. It will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the smaller meeting room of the Golden Oak Grill Buffet.

The Golden Oak Grill Buffet is at 401 S. Tulane Ave. in Oak Ridge.

Kiwanis members, friends, and the public are cordially invited, a press release said. The 6:30 p.m. talk follows a 6 p.m. dinner. The dinner buffet will be available for people who come to the Golden Oak Grill Buffet, pay for the dinner, get their food from the many choices, and go to the smaller meeting room nearer to the entrance and cashier station. The program presentation is available to persons who go directly to the smaller meeting room.

Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday focuses on tetanus elimination project

The Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge will meet at the Golden Oak Grill Buffet on Tuesday, and the program will feature Joe Tolson, president of the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club. Tolson will talk about The Eliminate MNT Project, which is a Kiwanis International Partnership with UNICEF to prevent and eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus, or MNT, across the globe.

The Kiwanis project’s goal is to raise $110 million to help UNICEF eliminate MNT and to ensure mothers have access to a safe birthing environment or three doses of the tetanus vaccine. Y-12 emergency services director to discuss plant activities

A lunch meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge will feature the director of emergency services at the Y-12 National Security Complex.

The meeting starts at noon, and the presentation by Jason M. Hatfield will begin at 12:10 p.m. It’s in the smaller meeting room of the Golden Oak Grill Buffet on 401 South Tulane Ave. in Oak Ridge. Hatfield will talk about Y-12 activities, a press release said.

Hatfield was an operations manager at Y-12 before being named emergency services director. Potential topics include Y-12 background, manufacturing specialties, health and safety emphasis, modernized facilities, new operations, nuclear materials, environmental protection, computing support, and related subjects.

The meeting is open to the public. A paid luncheon buffet will be available at about 11:40 a.m.

A meeting next week of the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge will feature Annie Cacheiro, executive director of Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, or ADFAC.

The Tuesday, Aug. 27, meeting be in the Golden Oak Grill Buffet’s smaller meeting room. The program will start at noon.

Cacheiro will talk about ADFAC activities that include social services and affordable housing programs, as well as ADFAC’s efforts to help local, lower-income families by providing assistance that leads to self sufficiency, a press release said. Members of the Oak Ridge Kiwanis, Enrichment Federal Credit Union, and Keys clubs in Oak Ridge and Clinton recently helped move toys and gifts at the Holiday Bureau, preparing them for distribution later to needy families.

The Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge announced last month that it was collecting toys, games, books, stuffed animals, and movies through Dec. 4 to give to the Holiday Bureau.

The Holiday Bureau distributes them to families with children before Christmas, selecting recipients based on household income.

The Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge is collecting toys, games, books, stuffed animals, and movies through Friday to give to the Holiday Bureau.

The Holiday Bureau distributes them to families  with children before Christmas, selecting recipients based on household income.

The Holiday Bureau will start distributing the toys on Dec. 6. Parents may select one new and some used items for each child. These are usually the only presents the children will receive, a Kiwanis press release said.

Oak Ridge Kiwanis Toy Drive Project Chair Felicia Langley will be collecting toys through Friday, Nov. 30, at the Enrichment Federal Credit Union, 201 S. Illinois Avenue, the release said. Toys will be taken to the Holiday Bureau before a Tuesday, Dec. 4, Kiwanis toy moving project. Checks can be made payable to the Holiday Bureau and could be marked Kiwanis Toy Drive.

Chamber president speaks to Kiwanis Tuesday

Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce President Parker Hardy will discuss local business developments and organizations during a Tuesday talk to the Kiwanis Club, a press release said.

The talk starts shortly after noon Tuesday in the meeting room of the Super China Buffet, 330 South Illinois Ave.

The press release said topics could include commercial and business developments, available buildings, Chamber functions and staff, Leadership Oak Ridge, Young Professionals of Oak Ridge, and areas of interest and concern.

The meeting is open to the public, and it starts at noon. Hardy’s talk is scheduled to start at 12:10 p.m. An optional lunch buffet will be available at 11:40 a.m.

Founder of horse therapy academy speaks at Kiwanis Club meeting

The founder of an organization that helps people with disabilities and other challenges through therapy with horses will speak at a Kiwanis Club meeting at lunchtime Tuesday.

Lynn Petr is the founder and executive director of the Shangri-La Therapeutic Academy of Riding in Loudon County. STAR serves children and adults there and in 10 surrounding counties, according to information from the Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge.
