Led by Guinn’s 21 points, Lady Wildcats are district champs for first time since 2010

CLINTON—Led by the 21 points of freshman Jada Guinn, the Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats won the District 3-AAA championship for the first time since 2010 in a 52-34 victory over Campbell County on Tuesday.

Guinn, a point guard, was named the most valuable player of the district tournament, which was played at Anderson County High School. Her game-high 21 points on Tuesday was a career high.

The Lady Wildcats (24-4) played with intensity on Tuesday, when Oak Ridge won its third game this season against the Lady Cougars, the second seed in District 3-AAA. Campbell County’s only two district losses during the regular season were to Oak Ridge.

“Coach (Paige) Green told us to come out with a lot of energy,” Guinn said after the district championship win on Tuesday. “It’ll help our defense, and our defense can help with offense.”

Of her tournament MVP award, Guinn said: “I just feel happy because I’m a freshman, and I’m just really excited.” [Read more…]

Trees down, power outages, flooding reported in Oak Ridge, Anderson County

Officials reported that trees were down across Oak Ridge and Anderson County on Wednesday morning, there were several power outages in Oak Ridge, and flooding was reported at some spots in Anderson County.

The flooding, fallen trees, and power outages were reported after a round of storms came through Wednesday morning.

AC school board to interview Parrott for schools director

Anderson County Schools will have a special-called meeting on Monday, February 29, to interview Tim Parrott, a current employees, for the director of schools position.

If hired, Parrott would replace Larry Foster, who is retiring. Parrott currently works in the Anderson County Schools Central Office as director of career and special education, and he has spent decades in the county school system.

The February 29 meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson County Schools board room.

The Anderson County Board of Education recently voted to suspend the interview process in its search for the next schools director and to begin working with Parrott on a new contract to succeed Foster.

Only one other applicant applied for the post, and members of a special search committee indicated that Parrott’s resume clearly stood out in comparison.

CLINTON—Oak Ridge and Campbell County will play for the District 3-AAA girls basketball championship on Tuesday.

Campbell County beat Powell 47-42 to advance to the championship in a semifinal game at Anderson County High School on Saturday, and Oak Ridge defeated Anderson County 54-28 in the other semifinal.

Oak Ridge, which was led by sophomore post Mykia Dowdell with 16 points on Saturday, won both matches with the Lady Cougars this year.

Tuesday’s final starts at 6 p.m. at Anderson County High School. [Read more…]

CLINTON—Powell senior Conley Hamilton scored with less than six seconds remaining to give the Panthers a one-point win over Anderson County in a second-round elimination game of the District 3-AAA basketball tournament on Thursday.

The Panthers (20-9) erased a 10-point third-quarter deficit and battled back to take a two-point lead about halfway through the fourth quarter.

But Zach Green of Anderson County tied the game at 42 with 1:10 remaining, and he gave the Mavericks a one-point lead on a three-point shot with about 30 seconds left.

Hamilton responded by driving to the basket in the last 10 seconds and firing off a short shot that went in, giving Powell a 46-45 win. [Read more…]

McCoy scores 17 as Lady Mavs advance past Halls

CLINTON—Brooklin McCoy of Anderson County scored a game-high 17 points in a 38-24 win over Halls in the second round of the District 3-AAA basketball tournament on Thursday.

The game was tied at the end of the first quarter, but Anderson County (13-17) gained a 10-point lead in the second quarter on its way to the win. The Lady Mavericks led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Anderson County will play Oak Ridge (22-4) in a semifinal game at Anderson County High School at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. [Read more…]

Dragons advance in district tournament after three-overtime win over Campbell Co.

The Clinton Dragons outlasted the Campbell County Cougars 61-56 in three overtimes Wednesday night to survive and advance in the District 3-AAA basketball tournament at Anderson County High School.

Dragon sophomore Daraon Jones scored a career-high 32 points, including seven in the third extra session, as Clinton secured a spot in the second round and set up a showdown with Karns at 7 p.m. Friday. A win will send the Dragons into a Saturday semifinal against Central at 6 p.m., and it will also secure them a spot in next week’s Region 2 tournament.

Elijah Phillips scored all 14 of his points in the second half to lead the Cougars, who led by as many as nine points in the second half before the Dragons closed the gap and ultimately sent the game into overtime. [Read more…]

District 3-AAA tournament: Mavericks, Lady Mavs advance; Lady Dragons done

Day one of the District 3-AAA basketball tournament at Anderson County is in the books, and both the Mavericks and Lady Mavs survived and advanced on Tuesday.

The Lady Mavs got things started by rolling over Clinton 55-26 behind an 11-0 second-quarter scoring run and a 20-point, 14-rebound performance from Brooklin McCoy. Senior Klarissa Roberts also reached double figures for AC, scoring 13 points. Clinton shot only 17 percent from the field as their season ended despite nine points and eight rebounds from Kelley Wandell in her final game in Orange and Black.

Next up for the Lady Mavs will be a 6 p.m. Thursday game with Halls, which easily dispatched Central 47-17. [Read more…]

Anderson County Democratic Party to select convention delegates on March 5

The Anderson County Democratic Party will help select Tennessee’s delegates to the Democratic Presidential Convention during a March 5 meeting in Oak Ridge.

The Democratic Party County Delegate Convention will be in the Oak Ridge Civic Center Social Room on Saturday, March 5, a press release said. The doors will open at 11:45 a.m. and close promptly at 1 p.m. EST.  No one will be admitted after the doors are closed. Those who are in the room and in the process of registering will be allowed to finish. The gavel will fall and the convention will convene at precisely 1:05 p.m. EST, as directed by the Tennessee Democratic Party, the press release said.

The event is open to all registered voters in the county, supporters of the Democratic Party, and those who agree to support the nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2016 Presidential election, the release said. The Party welcomes all to attend who wish to participate in selecting Tennessee’s delegates to the Democratic Presidential Convention.

The financial story of Anderson County in the last three years has been one of stability and progress. For the first time since 2006, Anderson County was removed from high-risk audit status in 2013, and placed on low-risk status. That held for 2013, 2014, and 2015.

As we closed out the books on 2015, our Accounts and Budgets and Schools cheered zero audit findings in our Comprehensive Annual Financial Report by the State of Tennessee’s Division of Local Government Audit.

Through partnership of our Budget Committee and County Commission, we saw three consecutive years of growth in fund balance, improved cash flow position, and a commitment to raising the bar on dipping into the fund balance by requiring a supermajority approval (12 of 16 members.) In 2013, we raised the supermajority requirement to $3.5 million, in 2014 to $4 million, and in 2015 to $4.5 million.

We kept new debt to a minimum, and for two consecutive years also modified existing debt agreements to save taxpayer money over the life of the bonds without extending the maturity dates of the debt. [Read more…]

No major problems reported after snow Friday; Key Springs Road temporarily closed

Authorities reported no major problems when snow fell in Oak Ridge and Anderson County on Friday morning, although some area school districts closed.

Key Springs Road in north Oak Ridge was temporarily closed at the request of the Oak Ridge Police Department after a tractor-trailer got stuck coming up the steep, curvy road.

It wasn’t necessarily weather-related, and it wasn’t clear how long the road would be closed, said Pat Fallon, Oak Ridge Public Works division manager.

Four trucks with snow plows were out clearing roads and spreading salt. No problems had been reported for at least an hour, Fallon said at about noon Friday. [Read more…]

Knoxville man dies in single-vehicle crash on Clinton Highway

A 72-year-old Knoxville man died in a single-vehicle crash on Clinton Highway in Anderson County on Tuesday, authorities said.

Harvey R. Weldon was driving north in a 2009 Ford Focus on Clinton Highway near Lonesome Dove Road at about 6:36 p.m. Tuesday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said in a preliminary report.

“While negotiating a curve to the left, the vehicle traveled off the east side of the roadway, entered a ditch, and struck a culvert,” the report said. [Read more…]
