The Oak Ridge City Council will consider increasing the amount of money to be used for parking lot work at Blankenship Field, and members will also consider awarding a contract for the project during a meeting tonight (Monday, June 1).
The City Council agreed in May 2014 to use $180,000 in traffic camera money for improvements to the lower parking lot at Blankenship Field, which is used for football games and high school graduation.
Council agreed to increase that amount to a maximum of $250,000 in July 2014, Oak Ridge Public Works Director Gary Cinder said in a May 26 memo to City Manager Mark Watson.
But the work could cost $264,791, according to a proposed contract from Rogers Group Inc. of Oak Ridge that the Council will consider tonight. [Read more…]

Citing family reasons, David Scott has resigned as the Lady Wildcats basketball coach, according to Oak Ridge High School Athletic Director Mike Mullins.
Scott announced the decision to the team on Thursday morning, Mullins said. Scott also resigned once before for family reasons.
Scott’s son Daniel was diagnosed with autism at an early age, and Mullins said the parents of special needs children have a lot of needs that “other parents can’t imagine.” Scott and his wife Michelle also have a daughter, Elizabeth Grace.
Recognizing that the cause hit home with Scott, the ORHS basketball teams and their supporters worked to raise awareness of autism this past season, including when the Wildcat Pride Club promoted “Hoops for Autism.”
Scott is also a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Robertsville Middle School, where he teaches geography. He has taught there since 1989. Michelle Scott also teaches at RMS. [Read more…]

Junior midfielder Lucas Altman scored three goals as Science Hill ended Oak Ridge’s season in a 3-1 win in a sectional playoff game in Johnson City on Saturday. The Hilltoppers move on to play in the state tournament in Murfreesboro next week.
