Report: Shots fired from bridge over I-75

A truck driver reported that someone was firing a gun off the Fourth Street Bridge over Interstate 75 South in Rocky Top early Thursday morning.

Just after midnight, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Adam Warren responded to the scene, where he met up with Rocky Top Police Department officers already there. Dairy truck driver William Burk, of London, Kentucky, told Warren that he had been headed south on I-75 and spotted what he described as a “large vehicle,” either a truck or a sport utility vehicle, parked on the bridge without any lights on. As he neared the bridge, Burk said that he heard four distinct gunshots.

CLINTON—A man who was reported to be suicidal had reportedly pointed a gun at officers before they fired their guns, fatally striking him, during a standoff with police near the city limits of north Clinton on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

On Wednesday, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the man as Jerry Orlando Weaver, 51, of Clinton.

A 911 caller had reported a suicidal man with a firearm in the 600 block of West Broad Street at about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. The man was reported to be near the roadway with a gun, according to the TBI, which is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The Clinton Police Department, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, and Seventh Judicial District Crime Task Force responded. There were reported to be more than a dozen officers at the site. There was a standoff of about 15 to 20 minutes, said Dave Clark, district attorney general in the Seventh Judicial District in Anderson County.

When they arrived, officers made contact with the man, who was threatening to harm himself, the TBI said.

TBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Clinton

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Clinton.

The shooting was reported in the 600 block of West Broad Street in Clinton, and agents are there, the TBI said.

Updated: Man identified in drowning at Bull Run Park

A person was pulled from the water at Bull Run Park in a possible drowning on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The man was identified on Wednesday as Anthony Wayne Daniels, 45, of Clinton.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the park at about 8:10 a.m. Tuesday, said Tyler Mayes, ACSO director of administrative services.

YWCA receives funding to advocate for domestic violence victims in Anderson, Roane, Loudon

The YWCA has received funding that will expand its victim advocacy services to families with a history of domestic violence and who work with the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services East Region in Anderson, Loudon, and Roane counties.

The award—$179,795 during a three-year period—was received by YWCA Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley.

The DCS liaison victim advocate will be co-located at the YWCA’s Oak Ridge location and the DCS East Region site in Anderson County, a press release said.

YWCA is one of only four organizations across the state to receive Victims of Crime Act funding from the Tennessee Office of Criminal Justice Programs, the press release said.

Rocky Top woman allegedly started fire at home with children inside

A Rocky Top woman allegedly started a fire at a home north of Clinton with an adult and two children inside in June, and she was arrested Monday, authorities said.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said Sharon Lee Braden, 48, of Rocky Top, was arrested on charges of aggravated arson, three counts of aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. Those charges are related to a June fire at a home on Offutt Road, which is east of Lake City Highway (Highway 25/State Route 9) between Clinton and Rocky Top.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sean Flynn issued arrest warrants as a result of evidence collected during his investigation and statements made by an eyewitness, a press release said.

“The witness reported that he saw Braden start the fire, and when he approached her, she fled,” the press release said.

An automatic stovetop device stopped a kitchen fire from spreading in an Oak Ridge apartment Thursday morning, firefighters said.

The fire was reported at about 10:52 a.m. Thursday in an apartment on Teller Village Lane. The first Oak Ridge Fire Department unit arrived within minutes and found smoke inside the apartment, a press release said.

No injuries were reported in the fire. The vent hood system, cabinets, and stovetop in the kitchen were damaged, but the fire was not able to spread because of the automatic stovetop fire suppressor device, the press release said.

CLINTON—One charge of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of aggravated assault, among other charges, were sent to the grand jury after a two-hour preliminary hearing in July for an Anderson County man accused of pointing a revolver at two deputies and pulling the trigger two or three times.

The defendant, Charles Edward Mason, 52, had faced 24 charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, eight counts of aggravated assault, three counts of aggravated kidnapping, and weapons and drug charges, among other violations. Eleven charges were sent to the grand jury, although it is possible that the grand jury could consider the charges that have been dismissed.

Mason, who unsuccessfully sought to represent himself during the hearing, has a violent crime history. He has previously pleaded guilty to two homicides, one in Knox County, Kentucky, in 1994 and the other in Anderson County, Tennessee, in 2010.

The Oak Ridge Police Department will host a community social at the Scarboro Community Center tonight (Thursday, August 1). It’s scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The event will be held inside the gymnasium at the Scarboro Community Center, which is located at 148 Carver Avenue in Oak Ridge.

“Everyone is invited to attend,” a press release said. “The goal of the event is to build and enhance community relationships.”

Man charged with assault, DUI after allegedly hitting vehicle with pregnant woman inside

A Clinton man has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault and driving under the influence after allegedly running a red light, hitting a vehicle with a pregnant woman inside, and then fleeing from the crash, according to court records.

The crash left the pregnant woman trapped and unable to talk to police officers because of her injuries, court records said. She was taken by ambulance to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The Clinton man driving the first vehicle, Bobby Lindsay, 48, has been charged with two counts of vehicular assault, DUI, possession of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked license (fourth offense), failure to use due care, leaving the scene of an accident, and violation of the financial responsibility law.

Affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Clinton said a witness saw the vehicle driven by Lindsay run a red light in Clinton on April 18 and hit the vehicle with the pregnant woman inside, leaving the woman trapped. Lindsay then jumped out of the first vehicle and ran off, the witness said.

Suicide believed to be cause of death on Tuesday

The Oak Ridge Police Department found a person who had died when officers responded to a call Tuesday evening.

The cause of death is believed to be suicide, the ORPD said.

No more information will be released, the ORPD said

ORFD warns of fraudulent carbon monoxide safety campaign

The Oak Ridge Fire Department is warning residents about a potentially fraudulent safety campaign. Firefighters were made aware this week that an unknown person claiming to be with the fire department is going to door to door, attempting to speak with homeowners about carbon monoxide detectors, a press release said.

The Oak Ridge Fire Department is not currently operating any door-to-door safety campaigns in our area, the press release said. ORFD personnel will also never try to sell items to residents.
