Letter: Citizens Police Academy increased respect, appreciation for ORPD

To the Editor:

We graduated from the third Oak Ridge Citizens Police Academy on March 30. It was such an honor to be a part of this group. Both of us already had deep respect and appreciation for the men and women of the Oak Ridge Police Department, but what we learned in the Academy increased our respect and appreciation for them exponentially.

A few things we learned about the officers and their jobs were:

The many tools they use in their job:

  • The split-second decisions they are required to make
  • Their ability to multi-task and be detail-oriented while staying focused
  • Their efforts to not only enforce laws, but to also use situations as more of a teaching tool instead of a punishment

We encourage everyone to apply for this informative and vital program. The small amount of time you must commit to is nothing compared to the education and information you will gain.

Thank you, Officer Brandan Sharp, for your tireless efforts in making our learning experience so enjoyable and enlightening. Thank you to all of the officers that took the time to teach us about their specific jobs and especially those that allowed us to ride with them. And thank you, Chief Akagi, for supporting educational efforts like this for the community.

Sincerely,

Rick and Emilee Smith
