Oak Ridge to fly flags at half-staff Friday, Saturday to remember fallen soldier

Flags at the Oak Ridge Municipal Building and city facilities will be flown at half-staff from noon Friday until sunset Saturday in honor of a solider killed in Afghanistan last week, City Manager Mark Watson said.

Funeral services for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Michael Ward, 24, start at 10 a.m. Saturday at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge. Ward’s mother lives in Oak Ridge, and he attended Oak Ridge High School before enlisting in the Army at 17.

He died Saturday, April 6, when a suicide car bomb exploded in southern Afghanistan, killing Ward, two other soldiers, and two civilians, including a U.S. diplomat.

“He will receive full military honors for his ultimate sacrifice in the service of his country,” Watson said in a statement Thursday. “In recognition of losing one of our own, and as authorized by administrative procedures of the city, as city manager, I am directing that flags at City Hall and city facilities be flown at half-staff from noon Friday, April 12, 2013, until sunset, April 13, 2013, as a gesture of our affection for this fallen soldier.”

Not sure what you mean by “he deserves a hero’s death,” but I’m certain this news article on the reverent observance of the sacrifice he made for his country doesn’t deserve a crummy commercial for a flag store.
