City advisory on insurance solicitation

Posted at 4:28 pm January 23, 2013
By City of Oak Ridge 4 Comments

American Water Resources of Tennessee has mailed a solicitation for service line insurance to Oak Ridge homeowners.

Homeowners should be advised of the following:

  • The solicitation is not from the City of Oak Ridge
  • The City of Oak Ridge is not endorsing the coverage
  • The City of Oak Ridge does not maintain any part of a homeowner’s sewer lateral, so if the homeowner decides to purchase the coverage for sewer offered by American Water Resources of Tennessee, they will need to make sure the coverage is for the entire sewer lateral from the house to the city main line
  • Insurance coverage such as this usually only covers repairs due to pipe collapse or total pipe blockage
  • Just like any insurance, the homeowner needs to be sure they know what repairs will be covered and what is not covered.

Questions concerning the coverage should be directed to American Water Resources of Tennessee at the toll free number provided on the solicitation.

Other questions or comments can be directed to the Oak Ridge Public Works Department at (865) 425-1875.

I received something like this about a month or so ago, however, it was from a company call HomeServe USA Repair Management Corp. with a PO Box from Memphis. It looks official and I’ve saved it thinking it is a scam or Postal fraud. I hope no one paid them any money. It was for maintenance and repair of the exterior water service line.

I’m wondering if some companies are picking up on the stories about the EPA order and the sewer system work here.

John, may not be limited to Oak Ridge — we got something very similar in Middle Georgia in just the last week or so. Can’t remember the company’s name, but it was the same sort of thing.

I just realized that I had recently refinanced the house, so they probably got that information to try to sell us a home insurance product.
