Retired teacher and coach Keys Fillauer has announced he is seeking re-election to the Oak Ridge Board of Education in November.
Fillauer has served on the Oak Ridge school board for 10 years, and he has been its chairman for three, a press release said. He was also appointed last year to serve a one-year term on the Tennessee School Boards Association board of directors.
“As an educator for over 30 years and as a parent who has had a son go through the Oak Ridge Schools, I feel that I have a vested interest in helping the schools continue to excel in providing an outstanding education for the young people of Oak Ridge,” Fillauer said. “The schools have always been a pillar for the city of Oak Ridge and I feel that in today’s times of budget constraints and a changing student population, the city of Oak Ridge can not allow its schools to be anywhere but in a position of excellence.â€
Fillauer taught and coached at Robertsville Junior High for 27 years and at Oak Ridge High School for four years. During his teaching career, he was recognized as a Tennessee Education Association teacher of the year and a Freedom Foundation Award winner, and he received the Governor’s Outstanding Tennessean Award, the press release said.
Fillauer has also received the Service Above Self award from the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, and he is a member of the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame.
Fillauer now serves as president of Fillauer Family Partnership LLC. He serves as a board member for the Ronald McDonald House, and he is president of KFI Inc. which organizes a fund-raising golf tournament for the Ronald McDonald House, the press release said.
Fillauer has been foreman of the Anderson County Grand Jury for eight years. He was appointed to that position by Judge Don Elledge.
Fillauer is married to the former Melanie Chitwood of Oak Ridge, and they have one son Parks, who is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The family is a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge.
Serving on the Fillauer re-election campaign team are Treasurer Alan Tatum, Melanie Fillauer, Parks Fillauer, and Shawna Smith.
Early voting for the Nov. 6 election starts Oct. 17.

The grand jury foreman needs to be changed every year. I have a serious bone to pick with the panel. They could indict a ham sandwich.

There are serious problems with the Oak Ridge School system. If I were Keys I’d retire before it all hits the fan. Better to leave now with pride than later with egg on his face, or worse.
