McNally, Yager named honorary members of Roane State Foundation board

State senators Randy McNally and Ken Yager have been named honorary members of the Roane State Foundation’s board of directors.

McNally and Yager have lengthy records of civic involvement, a press release said. McNally has received the Legislative Hero 2012 award from Tennessee Association of Mental Health Organizations; received the CASA President’s 2012 Award; was named a Rotary International Paul Harris fellow; and received the 1996 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.

Yager serves as a board member of the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee and the Roane County Heritage Commission. In addition, he is a member of the chambers of commerce in Dayton and Spring City, and in Campbell, Fentress, Morgan, Pickett, Roane, and Scott counties. Former University of Tennessee President Joe Johnson has been named to the board of directors for the Roane State Community College Foundation.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Johnson to our board,” said Paul Phillips, executive director of the Roane State Foundation. “Having a board member with his expertise and distinguished record in higher education will be a great benefit to the college.”

Johnson served as UT’s president from 1990-1999 and continues to serve as president emeritus. His tenure as president capped a lengthy career at UT that included alumni relations, public relations, fundraising, governmental relations, campus planning, capital construction, and serving as a liaison between the president’s office and intercollegiate athletics. Business leader Eric Barger has joined the board of directors for the Roane State Community College Foundation, a press release said.

Barger is vice president of C.R. Barger and Sons Inc., a Roane County company founded in the early 1960s by Eric’s grandparents, C.R. and Mary Barger. A 1994 Harriman High School graduate, Barger completed his associate degree at Roane State in 1997 and then earned a degree in civil engineering from Tennessee Tech University.

“Roane State helped me reach where I am at today in life and business,” Barger said. “Joining the board allows me to be a part of the future of Roane State, and that is exciting.”

Barger serves on the board of directors for the National Precast Concrete Association Educational Foundation. He is a member of the National Precast Concrete Association, American Society for Testing and Materials, Tennessee Onsite Wastewater Association, and the American Concrete Institute.

“We are very excited that Eric has agreed to join our board,” Roane State Foundation Executive Director Paul Phillips said. “He is a distinguished alumnus with passion for Roane State’s mission.”

The nonprofit Roane State Foundation provides financial support for the college’s students and program.

Hey artists, it’s time to “talk the talk, then chalk the walk.”

And for you folks who care about educating our future workforce and growing the local economy, it’s time to write checks for chalk art to help make our workforce smart.

Artists and sponsors are needed for the 13th annual Oak Ridge Street Painting Festival, which will be held the weekend of Oct. 6-7 at the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College on Briarcliff Road.

The Rotary Club of Oak Ridge, which organizes and sponsors the annual festival, urges artists of all ages and abilities to paint Roane State sidewalks for free with chalks of many colors. The club suggests that artists invite their artistic friends to join in the fun.

Every sponsor of a sidewalk square for an artist to chalk will contribute to scholarships for Roane State students. Each painted square is valued at $100.

Retired DA named executive director of Roane State Foundation

Paul Phillips, retired district attorney general for the 8th Judicial District, has been named executive director of the Roane State Foundation, a press release said.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides financial support for Roane State Community College students and programs. As executive director, Phillips will serves as chief administrative officer for the foundation’s board of trustees and direct the foundation’s programs.

Phillips succeeds Melinda Hillman, the college’s vice president for advancement and community relations. Hillman had served as the foundation’s executive director in addition to her responsibilities as leader for Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus and seven more satellite centers. Hillman will continue to lead the Oak Ridge campus and satellite centers.
