The Oak Ridge girls’ soccer team finished second in District 3-AAA, and the Lady Wildcats will play Farragut in a Region 2-AAA semifinal game today (Tuesday, October 17).

Today’s game is an elimination game, meaning the season is over for the loser. The winner will be guaranteed at least two more games, the Region 2-AAA championship and a Class AAA sectional game. The sectional games will determine which eight teams will play in the Class AAA state tournament.

The District 3-AAA tournament championship game was Thursday at Powell Middle School. Powell, the top seed in the district tournament, won 6-0. Oak Ridge was the number two seed.

It was the third year in a row that Oak Ridge (10-8-1, 3-1 District 3-AAA) and Powell (13-3-1, 4-0) played for the District 3-AAA championship—and the fourth time in five years. The Lady Wildcats won last year 2-0, and the Lady Panthers defeated Oak Ridge 1-0 in 2015.

The Powell Lady Panthers won what is believed to be their first-ever district soccer title in a 5-4 win during a penalty kick shootout against Oak Ridge on Thursday.

No one scored in 80 minutes of regulation time during the District 3-AAA championship game at Powell Middle School on Thursday, October 15. Then the score remained tied 0-0 through two 10-minute overtimes and two five-minute sudden death overtimes.

The game then went to penalty kicks, with the Lady Panthers and Lady Wildcats each getting five tries.

But the two teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the fifth attempt, Powell Coach Mark Smith said. So, the game went to a sixth try, and that’s when Powell scored one and Oak Ridge (13-4, 4-1 District 3-AAA) did not.

Sophomore Brooke Huffaker of Powell (10-4-3, 5-0) scored the winning goal. [Read more…]

POWELL—Powell sophomore Raygan Scarbrough scored three goals, a hat trick, in a 4-1 win over Oak Ridge at Powell on Thursday.

The loss ended a 10-game winning streak for the Lady Wildcats, who are now 10-1 overall and 3-1 in District 3-Class AAA. It could have an impact on whether Oak Ridge gets home field advantage in the playoffs, Lady Wildcats Coach Jeff Trombly said.

It was also an important district victory for Powell (4-2-1, 2-0).

“It’s a huge win for us,” Powell Coach Mark Smith said. “It’s become a good rivalry between the two teams.”

He said Oak Ridge, Powell, and Karns have been the top three seeds in the district the past three years. [Read more…]
