UT Singers perform in last concert of season in Oak Ridge on Sunday

UT Singers, the University of Tennessee’s jazz choir

The UT Singers, the University of Tennessee’s jazz choir, will present their last concert of the season at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

The choir is directed by Wendel Werner, and the concert starts at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6. The community is invited, and there is no cost to attend, a press release said.

Free community meal at ORUUC on Friday

The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will have a free community meal on Friday, March 28, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the church’s Social Hall. Dine-in or takeout will be available.

Homemade Santa Fe chili, corn chips, and blond brownies and milk are on the menu.

The Stone Soup Ministry free community meal is held the last Friday of every month at the same time in the Social Hall. Food for the free monthly meal is provided by the ORUUC congregation along with financial support from several members of the Oak Ridge community. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church has a free community meal on Friday, part of its monthly Stone Soup Ministry.

Everyone is welcome to attend, a press release said. Dine-in or takeout will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Social Hall of the church, which is at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The menu includes homemade potato corn chowder, a sandwich, and cookies. [Read more…]

Former Sweet Honey in the Rock member to lead music workshop at ORUUC

Ysaye M. Barnwell, a former longtime member of Sweet Honey in the Rock, an a cappella group, is returning to Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church to lead a three-night workshop series: Evolution of African-American Music from Africa to Civil Rights.

The evenings of singing and learning will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 20, 21, and 22 at ORUUC, a press release said. ORUUC is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Those who attend will experience singing in the African-American tradition of music from Africa to the civil rights era, the press release said. The workshop begins on Thursday, Feb. 20, with the chants of Africa and the diaspora. Spirituals and slave songs will be the focus on Friday, Feb. 21. The series will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 22, with songs of the civil rights era. [Read more…]

Free flu shots, warm coats at free Stone Soup community meal on Friday

Stay warm and healthy with a steamy bowl of homemade soup and a free flu shot at a community meal at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Friday.

The meal is scheduled from 5 to 6 p.m. in the church’s Social Hall. It’s a great opportunity to spend time to relax and enjoy time with others from throughout the community, a press release said.

The Stone Soup team will prepare and serve a homemade meal of black eyed pea soup, sandwiches, pumpkin pie, and milk.

Nurses from the Free Medical Clinic are volunteering their time to give flu shots. Nicknamed the “flu crew,” the nurses plan to be ready to start at 4:30 p.m. and plan to finish at 5:30 p.m. The vaccine is being provided by the clinic. [Read more…]

Forum on homelessness in Anderson County on Tuesday

Experts from social service agencies and faith-based groups will discuss homelessness in Anderson County during a Tuesday evening forum.

The forum starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. It’s been organized by the Trinity Out-Reach Center of Hope, or TORCH, and ORUUC.

The experts and community members will also discuss factors that contribute to homelessness in the county, explore potential solutions, and consider how to begin a 10-year plan to end chronic homelessness, a press release said. The discussion will also outline ways that people can be involved in the upcoming “Point In Time Count.”

Choral concert at ORUUC tonight celebrates National Coming Out Day

In celebration of National Coming Out Day, Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church will present a choral concert headlined by the Knoxville Gay Men’s Chorus, under the direction of Freddie Brabson. The concert is at 7 p.m. today at ORUUC. Tickets are $5.

Proceeds will go to the Gay/Straight Alliance at Oak Ridge High School. ORUUC is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

There will also be featured performances by musicians from other area Unitarian Universalist churches, including the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church choir, the new Foothills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship choir, ORUUC’s own Mighty Choir, as well as musical selections from members of The Westside Unitarian Universalist Church. A drumming and spirituality workshop has been scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Drums will be available, or you can bring your own. The workshop will be led by Matt Meyer, and it starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.

The workshop is open to people of all skill levels, and it will include instruction on basic techniques, as well as information on the origins of percussion instruments from around the world, a press release said. Everyone is welcome to come to a free community meal at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church this evening, a press release said.

Tonight’s menu includes Southwestern bean salad, tortilla chips, chocolate chip granola bars, and icy cold watermelon. Dine-in or take-out will be available from 5 to 6 p.m.
