Oak Ridge police warn of ‘spoofing’ phone scam

The City of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge Police Department are warning of a scam telephone call that people may receive that uses a local telephone number with a 425 prefix and is titled “City of Oak Ridge.”

One of the numbers from which calls have been been received is (865) 425-1892. The calls have a recorded message that tell the person receiving the call that they have won a trip or something of value.

“This call is not from the City of Oak Ridge,” city officials said. “Rather, it is a scam which utilizes ‘spoofing’ software. Caller identification ‘spoofing’ is technology that causes the telephone network to indicate to the receiver of the call that the originator of the call is a station other than the true originating station. In other words, the software allows the caller to program the caller ID to any message or originating title.”

Again, (865) 425-1892 is not a number associated with the City of Oak Ridge. People who receive these calls should hang up immediately and ignore any recorded message from the caller, the city said.

The National Park Service and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service will partner to hold a naturalization ceremony for new United States citizens on Friday, June 16. The ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 16 at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge. The public is invited to witness the ceremony, a press release said.

“National parks aren’t just about scenic beauty,” said Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area Superintendent Niki Stephanie Nicholas. “Rather, they also represent sites of conscience, and commemoration. These sites serve as the standard-bearers of our shared history and what it means to be American. As you contemplate what it means to be an American citizen and these places that you now own, I would ask you to also play a role in protecting them and preserving them. South Illinois Avenue re-opened Friday afternoon after being closed for about six hours to clean up about 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled onto the road following a crash involving a dump truck and two vehicles at Lafayette Drive/Scarboro Road in south Oak Ridge.

The fuel was spread out over about 100 yards, or roughly the length of a football field.

The Oak Ridge Public Works Department dumped sand to contain the fuel, which was spread across the five-lane roadway, and city workers and equipment, including from the Oak Ridge Fire Department, helped sweep it up with help from several vehicles, including a sweeper.

An environmental cleanup company was responding to help with the cleanup and dispose of the waste, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 7:55 a.m. Friday. The Oak Ridge Police Department, which investigated the crash, announced that the road had re-opened at 1:47 p.m. [Read more…]
