Today: ORPD has Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony

The Oak Ridge Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies across the country in celebrating National Police Week, May 12-18. As part of the week-long observance, the department will host a Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, to honor law enforcement personnel.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Oak Ridge Municipal Building. The keynote speaker will be Rick Scarbrough, executive director of the University of Tennessee’s Law Enforcement Innovation Center in Oak Ridge and former chief of the Clinton Police Department. The public and all law enforcement officers are invited to attend, a press release said.

The Oak Ridge Police Department is celebrating National Police Week from May 13-19 with other law enforcement agencies across the nation, and the department plans to host two events on Tuesday, May 15. Everyone is invited, a press release said.

The first event is a Peace Officers Memorial Day Service to honor all law enforcement personnel. The ceremony will be held at the flagpole in front of the Oak Ridge Municipal Building at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The keynote speaker will be Anderson County District Attorney General Dave Clark.

The second event is an awards ceremony, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. inside the Municipal Building Courtroom. Oak Ridge Police Department personnel will be recognized with various certificates, awards, and letters of commendation. [Read more…]

Anderson County Sheriff’s Department celebrating National Police Week

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department will join law enforcement agencies across the nation in celebrating National Police Week, May 14 through May 20, a press release said.

May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week containing May 15 has been National Police Week, since President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 on October 1, 1962. It was not until May 15, 1982, that the first National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day service was held.

Activities during National Police Week now include the annual Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, D.C. The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day Service on May 15 draws thousands from across the nation.

The Sheriff’s Department has lost eight officers in the line of duty. Seven were killed by gunfire, and one died in an automobile accident, the press release said. [Read more…]

Law enforcement to be honored during ceremony this afternoon

Law enforcement personnel will be honored during a Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony in Oak Ridge today, and certificates and letters of commendation will be awarded to Oak Ridge Police Department personnel this afternoon.

The Oak Ridge Police Department is joining other law enforcement agencies across the nation in celebrating National Police Week, Sunday, May 14, through Saturday, May 20, a press release said.

The Oak Ridge Police Department will honor all law enforcement personnel during a Peace Officers Memorial Day Ceremony held in front of the Oak Ridge Municipal Building at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15. The keynote speaker will be Bishop Richard Stika of the Diocese of Knoxville.

Beginning at 3 p.m., following the memorial service, certificates and letters of commendation will be awarded to Oak Ridge Police Department personnel in the Municipal Building Courtroom. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony

Law enforcement officers from the Oak Ridge Police Department and Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies honor Peace Officer Memorial Day on Thursday.

Eight new Oak Ridge police officers were sworn in, two were promoted, and many were honored with new awards during a Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony on Wednesday.

The annual May 15 ceremony is part of National Police Week, and it pays tribute to local, state, and federal peace officers, including those who died on the job.

Oak Ridge Police Chief Jim Akagi said more than 20,000 officers have died while working since 1792, and on average, one is killed every 57 hours.

Last year, 127 died, and so far this year, 50 have been killed.

“Your unsung work is what binds us all together,” Akagi told several dozen officers gathered outside the Oak Ridge Municipal Building on a warm, sunny Wednesday afternoon. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Police Department will honor law enforcement personnel during the annual Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15.

It’s part of National Police Week, scheduled from May 12 through May 18.

The Oak Ridge ceremony will be held in front of the Oak Ridge Municipal Building near the flagpole at 1:30 p.m. May 15. Personnel from all law enforcement agencies in the Anderson and Roane County areas have been invited to attend, along with state and federal law enforcement personnel, as well as local prosecutorial elements and public officials, a press release said. National Police Week memorial on Tuesday

Local law enforcement agencies will celebrate National Police Week, May 13 through May 19, with a memorial ceremony for fallen officers in Oak Ridge on Tuesday.

The service on Tuesday, which is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, will be at the Oak Ridge Municipal Building. It’s part of next week’s National Police Week ceremonies.
