The tradition of funding scholarships for Middle College students enrolled in Roane State Community College’s innovative program is going strong and continues to help participants reach long-term goals.

A $34,000 annual contribution from UT-Battelle helps cover tuition and other costs for students from Roane County’s five high schools to attend Middle College. This year, 57 Roane County students are enrolled in the curriculum.

UT-Battelle is the contractor that manages Oak Ridge National Laboratory, located in Roane County, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Middle College, now in its sixth year, is a two-year program for high-achieving high school students who want to get a head start on college.

High school juniors enrolled in Middle College take college courses at one of Roane State’s campuses in the mornings and return to their respective high schools in the afternoons. That way, they can graduate from high school at the same time they earn an associate degree from Roane State. Graduates can then transfer to other colleges and enroll as juniors.

Roane State Community College is joining the state’s growing movement to better train new workers by sponsoring apprenticeship programs with area businesses and industries. The college is currently working with one of Anderson County’s biggest employers.

“We will be working with SL Tennessee and our Middle College students in mechatronics to develop programs of study and identify specific apprenticeship tasks,” said Kim Harris, the college’s director of workforce training and placement.

“We look forward to working closely with Roane State in starting the apprenticeship program,” said SL Tennessee Director Scott Laska. “We believe that this program will help solve our skills gap in our operation and provide meaningful career opportunities for the community.”

SL Tennessee, located in the Clinton Interstate 75 Industrial Park, manufactures automotive parts and is near Roane State’s Clinton Higher Education and Workforce Training Facility. The college’s classes in mechatronics—the engineering of electrical and mechanical systems—are offered there.

One wants to be a doctor. Another, a lawyer involved in immigration cases. Two plan to become engineers, another wants to be involved in mission work, and one intends to work as an ultrasound technician.

They are among 14 Oak Ridge High School students who are members of the first Roane State Community College Middle College class, and they’re getting ready to graduate this spring, both from high school and college.

Although they have varying career goals, they have several things in common. They all say they have enjoyed their Middle College experiences, they’ve all been accepted to colleges and universities to continue their educations, and they’re fans of their advisor and English instructor, Assistant Roane State Professor Margaret “Maggie” Bouldin.

Twelve Roane County students participating in Roane State Community College’s Middle College have received $34,000 in annual scholarships thanks to UT-Battelle, a press release said. The scholarships were made possible through a gift to the Roane State Foundation.

Roane State’s Middle College program allows high school students to take college classes in their junior and senior years and then graduate with their associate degrees and their diplomas. Middle College graduates are then able to complete their bachelor’s degrees just two years after finishing high school.

Middle College students pay for tuition through a combination of out-of-pocket funds, use of state grants, and other private scholarships, the press release said. The UT-Battelle Scholarship was established in fall 2015, and it is awarded to Middle College students from Roane County. The scholarship is administered by the Roane State Foundation. [Read more…]

Roane State student thrives in Middle College program

Ask Connor Murphy about Roane State’s Middle College program, and his face lights up.

“I really like it,” said Connor, 17, who completed his first year of the innovative program while achieving academic honors.

In Middle College, eligible high school juniors attend Roane State classes in the mornings and return to their respective schools in the afternoons to complete their high school courses.

By the time Middle College students graduate from high school, they also receive associate degrees from Roane State, giving them a two-year head start toward a bachelor’s degree.

Connor thrives on courses like Calculus II and Calculus-based Physics, but he found the Roane State art appreciation course last fall to be a bit daunting and filled with concepts new to him.

“I thought Connor could coast through that (art appreciation),” said his father, Jack Murphy. “But there were quizzes every week, and it was challenging.”

Connor’s abilities in math and science perhaps aren’t too surprising, especially for someone whose hobbies include computer programming and mining cryptocurrencies.

Connor has been a familiar sight around the college’s Oak Ridge campus this year, piloting his motorized wheelchair with his 85-pound golden retriever, a service dog named “Tank,” by his side.

Connor has an ailment called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. His mom, Lise Murphy, accompanies him to Roane State and helps out when needed. Both parents have become huge fans of Roane State and its Middle College program as a result of their son’s experiences.

“I love it,” Lise Murphy said. She’s been going to school with Connor since kindergarten, but her role has changed over the years. “I used to help the teachers, but now, I’m just trying to keep up with the classes,” she said.

“The (Roane State) teachers have been so wonderful, and I’ve seen this first-hand. It’s been a great, great experience, and I give huge kudos to the professors.”

“Middle College gives the kids a chance to excel in academically challenging classes,” Jack Murphy said. “I think Middle College is a huge opportunity.”

Both parents and Connor’s aunt, Marianne Murphy, heap praise on college officials for being so accommodating. “They can’t do enough (for Connor),” Lise Murphy said.

One of Connor’s courses was moved to a downstairs classroom in the college’s Coffey-McNally Building when an elevator was briefly out of order, Marianne Murphy recalled.

For Connor, Roane State’s fall semester will include more challenging courses, especially in math and science.

He’s completed the necessary requirements to graduate from Clinton High, but he still goes there for robotics club and National Honor Society meetings.

Then, it’s on to a university — perhaps the University of Tennessee — where he wants to major in bioengineering.

In this era of online hacking and ransomware, jobs in cybersecurity are booming, and they pay extremely well, an expert in the field told Roane State Community College faculty and students.

Rob Ashcraft, with the state’s largest firm of its kind—Sword & Shield Enterprise Security of Knoxville—recently gave an overview of the various positions available in the profession.

The demand for those jobs is growing 350 percent faster than other information technology positions, and those with the appropriate certifications can make as much as $55 an hour.

“I think you made a good choice,” Ashcraft told students now enrolled in Roane State’s new cyber defense program, which was launched in the fall 2017 semester. “It’s a great career, and it’s a lot of fun.” [Read more…]

As the only student in her high school class to attend Roane State’s Middle College in the fall of 2015, Juliann Hopper said her Oliver Springs High School classmates initially kidded her about it.

“They kind of gave me a hard time at first, but they got over it, and they now wish they had done Middle College too,” Hopper said.

Hopper, 19, is now a junior at Tennessee Tech, majoring in microbiology and well on her way toward a possible career as a research scientist.

She said she’d like to work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which awarded her a scholarship to help pay for three of her four Middle College semesters. [Read more…]

More than 30 students from Roane County schools will have a chance to graduate from high school with a diploma and a two-year associate degree through Roane State Community College’s first Middle College, which is launching this fall at the main campus in Harriman.

For years, Roane State has offered dual studies courses, which allow high school students to earn some college credit while in high school. Middle College, created in partnership with Roane County Schools, offers students an opportunity to complete 60 hours (four semesters) of college credit, more courses than most students can typically take through dual studies alone.

After earning an associate degree in high school, students who attend a university could start as juniors and finish their bachelor’s degree just two years after high school. [Read more…]
