Tennis: Freshman is undefeated

Oak Ridge High School freshman Andrew Lee is undefeated in his first season playing tennis as a Wildcat.

Lee, who is playing at number one singles and doubles, has won won 18 singles and doubles matches against Maryville, Hardin Valley, and seven District 3 tennis teams, Coach David Bowman said.

“His sportsmanship and record has established him as a leader on the courts, plus he is humble and a great teammate off the courts,” Bowman said. “ORHS looks forward to having him represent the Wildcats in East Tennessee’s TSSAA tournaments starting the second week of May at Tyson Park.”

The Oak Ridge tennis teams have one home match left this season to play. It’s at 4:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, against Powell High School.

Team heads to National Science Bowl after third straight state win

After months of training, studying, and improving their competition skills, 55 high school teams from across the state of Tennessee gathered recently to test their knowledge in broad science disciplines including chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and energy.

Oak Ridge High School placed first in the annual competition and received an all-expenses-paid trip to the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., held April 25-29, as well as a $1,000 cash prize and a first-place trophy.

The Tennessee Science Bowl is the nation’s third-largest regional competition, a press release said. Held at Pellissippi State Community College’s Blount County Campus, the regional bowl prepares students to compete nationally with other exceptional students from schools across the country. ORHS team advances to National Science Bowl

After months of training, studying, and improving their competition skills, 59 high school teams from across the state of Tennessee gathered this weekend to test their knowledge in broad science disciplines including chemistry, biology, physics, and energy.

Melody Guo, a ninth grade French 2 Honors student at Oak Ridge High School, is a platinum winner in the 2017 National French Contest.

The National French Contest is known as LeGrand Concours. It is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French, and it is open to all students of French in grades 1-12 all 50 states and abroad. Students take a written test and compete against students with similar educational background for prizes.

Platinum is the highest award in LeGrand Concours. Guo earned the top score in the nation in her respective level 2A French. [Read more…]

Music Arts students recently played cello, piccolo, flute, and piano during a recital at West Village Christian Church on Robertsville Road.

“The performances went off without a hitch on Sunday afternoon, with applause filling the room as each of the students and instructors finished their performances,” a press release said. “This was something that we put on as a showcase of the many talents that abound here at Music Arts and was the first of 2013.”
