Oak Ridge Schools are closed today as a layer of ice coated the ground in Oak Ridge, making roads and sidewalks slippery.

The schools had originally planned to open two hours late.

Other local school systems are also closed today (Monday, January 8) as the forecast had called for freezing rain or a wintry mix of precipitation around school arrival time this morning. Among the other school systems closed are Anderson County, Clinton, and Roane County. Roane State Community College is closed today as well (see here for more information). [Read more…]

THP: Man injured in December crash dies

A man injured in a late December accident on Interstate 40 in Roane County died from his injuries, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The crash happened on I-40 near Gallaher Road in Kingston on Saturday, December 27.

Troopers said that Josephine Yeager, 18, of Dayton, was driving a 2004 Kia minivan in the far right eastbound lane near mile marker 356 and was trying to change lanes into the far left lane when she hit a 2014 Cadillac sedan driven by Norma L. Craig, 70, of Cookeville. The collision forced the Cadillac off the left side of roadway into the center median, THP Trooper Alexander Evans said in a report. [Read more…]

Two injured in Roane crash

Two people were injured in a Saturday traffic accident in Roane County.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said two vehicles were headed east on Interstate 40 around noon when they collided on the overpass near Gallaher Road. The collision caused one vehicle to fall off the overpass and land on Gallaher Road.

Troopers said the two people had to be cut from the vehicle, and that Lifestar was sent to the scene. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Winter storm warning in effect for mountains, heavy snowfall possible

A winter storm warning is in effect in the mountains of East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and western North Carolina from Friday to Saturday night, and up to 15 inches of snow is possible at elevations above 5,000 feet, forecasters said.

Snowfall of between four to eight inches is expected for locations above 2,500 feet, including Interstate 40 in North Carolina and I-26 in Unicoi County, according to the National Weather Service in Morristown. Up to 12-15 inches of snow is possible on the highest peaks above 5,000 feet, including U.S. Highway 441 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. [Read more…]

THP IDs man found on I-40 in Roane County near Hwy 95, seeks help

Authorities have identified the man found dead early Christmas morning on Interstate 40 in Roane County, and they said he appears to have either jumped or fallen from a moving vehicle before being struck by another vehicle.

The body of Brian William Taylor, 42, of Heath Springs, S.C., was found on the eastbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 364, which is near Highway 95 and south of Melton Hill Dam, at about 2:30 a.m. Dec. 25, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said in a press release.

Taylor is a white man, and when he was found, he was wearing blue jeans, a blue and white checked flannel type shirt, and tan work boots, the THP said. [Read more…]
