An Oak Ridge talent show and pub quiz night will benefit the historic, renovated Grove Theater on March 28 and 29.

An Oak Ridge talent show and pub quiz night will benefit the historic, renovated Grove Theater on March 28 and 29.

On Friday, March 28, the new nonprofit organization Friends of the Grove Theater will have a showcase titled “Oak Ridge Has Talent.” It will benefit the Grove, a legacy of the Manhattan Project era that is celebrating 70 years of history and a decade since its re-opening by High Places Community Church, a press release said.

The Manhattan Project was a top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic bombs during World War II.

All proceeds from the March 28 show at the Grove will be used to maintain the facility as a performing arts center for Oak Ridge and East Tennessee organizations, the press release said. The show starts at 7 p.m., and it will include performances from community partners and other locals who want to support the Grove. Comedian and humorist Tyler Gooch will entertain between acts. Music lovers can have lunch on Monday with Dan Allcott, director of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, and learn about the Feb. 15 concert.

“Dialogue with Dan” will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of the historic Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge. Allcott will discuss the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s concert featuring the music of Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi.

Those attending are encouraged to brown bag or to buy a sandwich from Panera for $8.

Community Band concert at Grove Theater to feature early 20th century music

The Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble will present its next concert in the “Music for a Lifetime” series at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.

The concert program will feature “Early 20th Century Music” with tunes from the Golden Age, the Roaring ’20s, the ’30s, and from the Big Band era. These will include some blues by W.C. Handy, some Gershwin from “Porgy and Bess,” and big band music: “A String of Pearls,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Satin Doll,” and “Opus One.” Other songs on the program will be music from the “Grand Canyon Suite,” a John Philip Sousa march, and others. Sound Company, Oak Ridge’s Children’s Performing Choir, will present a unique choral performance entitled “Just Sing!” this weekend, a press release said.

The Saturday show features The Nashville Singers. It will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Historic Grove Theater at High Places Church.

The Sunday show begins at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

Film shown Friday features families struggling after economic crisis

A new nonprofit organization that helps homeless families in Anderson County will show a documentary on Friday that features families struggling after the Great Recession, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The 7 p.m. screening of “American Winter,” an HBO documentary, has been organized by TORCH (Trinity Out-Reach Center of Hope). The film was produced during one winter in one American city, and it presents an “intimate snapshot of the state of the nation’s economy as it is playing out in millions of American families, and highlights the human consequences of the decline of the middle class and the fracturing of the American Dream,” a press release said. Two local bands will play a benefit concert on Friday for a nonprofit medical research organization.

The concert is at the Historic Grove Theater, and it features The Collies, a folk and psychedelic rock band from Oak Ridge. The Sea Legs, an alternative rock band from Webb High School, will open the show, a press release said.

The press release said all proceeds will benefit Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a leading nonprofit focused on funding SMA research to develop a treatment and cure for the disease. [Read more…]

Sound Company Children’s Choir of Oak Ridge will celebrate their 10th anniversary by performing their greatest hits from the past decade this weekend.

There will be three performances, one at 9:30 a.m. Friday, a second at 7 p.m., and a third at 3 p.m. Saturday. All shows will be performed at the Historic Grove Theater at High Places Church.

Ballet and Pilates for Life will be presenting its first public performance—“Peter and the Wolf”—at the Grove Theater this weekend.

“You will be delighted as our children’s ballet brings to life Sergei Prokofiev’s marvelous musical tale,” artistic director Elize Allan said in a press release. “We want the community to come out, support our young dancers, and enjoy a great show.”

“Peter and the Wolf” is the story of a young boy who ventures outside the safety of his grandfather’s cottage gate to frolic in the green meadow—but beware, the release said. [Read more…]

Dan Allcott, music director of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association and conductor of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, will speak at noon Monday in the lobby of the historic Grove Theater, High Places Community Church. This will be the fourth “Dialogue with Dan” of the concert season.

His topic will be the “Spring in the Mountains” ORSO-Chorus concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Mar. 9, at Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center. The featured artist will be Stephen Seifert, mountain dulcimerist from Tennessee, in keeping with the ORSO season theme—“Tennessee Sounds Good to Me.”

Mayer is a folk singer/songwriter from Minnesota who has performed in Oak Ridge before and has been well-received.
