AC Events: Pickin’ in the Park, Wheelers for the Wounded, David Hall Cabin open house

Here are three events happening in Anderson County this weekend:

Pickin’ in the Park Concert—Friday, October 2, at Norris Dam State Park

Join the Friends of Norris Dam State Park for the annual Pickin’ in the Park Concert held the first Friday of October from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. This event is an evening full of bluegrass music, barbecue, local craft vendors, laughter, and fun, organizers said.

The event is located at the historic amphitheater and tearoom on the east side of Norris Dam State Park. There is no entrance fee, but donations to the Friends of Norris Dam are strongly encouraged.

Oak Ridge Library art exhibit in July features Ray Smith photos

The art exhibit at Oak Ridge Public Library for the month of July is a collection of 40 photographs by D. Ray Smith. Titled “Some of My Favorites,” this exhibit is a wonderful selection of images from Ray Smith’s archive of nature photographs. His images depict wildflowers, trees, rivers, and streams from various East Tennessee locations including the University of Tennessee Arboretum and Frozen Head State Park.

Smith is well-known to most Oak Ridgers. He is the historian at the Y-12 National Security Complex and a journalist for The Oak Ridger newspaper, and he serves on a number of boards of directors for local nonprofit organizations. A resident of Oak Ridge for 44 years, he and his wife Fanny have two sons and five grandchildren. He is often found at community events taking photographs that he generously shares with the public. David Hall Cabin, oldest home in Anderson, has open house this weekend

The historic David Hall Cabin, the oldest home and business in Anderson County, will have its annual Spring Open House this weekend—Saturday, June 6, and Sunday June 7—from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

This year, Civil War battle re-enactments will be held both days at 2 p.m.

In addition, there will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, lye soap making, butter churning, and weaving, as well as storytelling and bluegrass and gospel music throughout the weekend. [Read more…]

Anderson Commission Chair Fritts seeks re-election

Chairman Chuck Fritts is seeking re-election to the Anderson County Commission, representing District 1. District 1 includes the Bull Run and Claxton precincts.

“It has truly been an honor and a privilege to represent the residents of District 1 on the Anderson County Commission,” Fritts said in a press release. “I take very seriously the trust that you have placed in me, and it is my desire that you will allow me to continue to serve you and, working with my fellow commissioners, to move Anderson County forward.”

First elected in 2002, Fritts said he brings valuable experience, knowledge, and leadership to the Anderson County Commission and has worked hard to represent the residents of District 1.

“He has taken this position very seriously and has worked long hours to do the job he felt he was elected to do,” the press release said. “He is not only well-known throughout Anderson County, but also throughout the state of Tennessee.” [Read more…]

The John Rice Irwin-Anderson County Chapter of Sons of the Revolution honored the county mayor earlier this month for her commitment to historic preservation, a press release said.

It said chapter members delivered a surprise token of appreciation at Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank’s office on Feb. 4.
