Dispose of unused medicine safely at four locations Saturday

Anderson County residents can get rid of their unused medicine on Saturday as the county participates in National Drug Take-Back Day sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Oak Ridge Police Department, Clinton Police Department, Norris Police Department, Lake City Police Department, and Oliver Springs Police Department, along with ASAP, will host the event as part of a continued effort to reduce drug abuse and practice stewardship toward our environment. Medication may be dropped off with officers between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Oak Ridge Police Department at 200 S. Tulane Ave. or dropped in the bin at the locations listed below. All packaging materials will be recycled.

Clinton man charged with murder in apparent stabbing death

A 25-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman who appeared to have been stabbed and was knocking on doors in Clinton asking for help early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Kieth Pittman is being held at the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton. The Clinton Police Department said the victim, Heather McKamey, 22, was believed to be a mother of three, but the children were not home at the time of the incident.

Clinton police officers responded to a report of a disturbance at 301 Park Ave. at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday. The home is a residence within the Clinton Public Housing system. A witness told CPD K9 Officer Matt Howell that a male and female had been arguing before they both fled on foot, a news release said. [Read more…]

The Clinton Police Department is investigating the death of a female who appeared to have been stabbed and was reportedly knocking on doors and asking for help early Saturday morning, authorities said.

A statement from Clinton Police Chief Rick Scarbrough said officers responded to a report of a disturbance at 301 Park Ave. at about 2:25 a.m. Saturday.

“Upon officer’s arrival, a witness stated that a male and female had been arguing before they both fled on foot,” the statement said. “At approximately 2:30 a.m., another call came in from (the) nearby 800 block of McAdoo Street, for a female knocking on doors asking for help. Upon the officer’s arrival, they found a female victim who appeared to have been stabbed. Victim died on the scene.” [Read more…]

The percentage of crimes solved by Clinton Police Department officers and detectives was up in 2013, while the total number of crimes was down, authorities said.

“The numbers are moving in the right direction…and that’s good news for everyone in Clinton,” CPD Chief Rick Scarbrough said.

CPD cleared nearly half of the reported crimes in 2013, according to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation crime statistics, a press release said. The Clinton Police Department’s percentage of crimes cleared is up about 5 percent from 2012 numbers and is higher than most other area agencies.

“That means our officers are solving more cases,” the press release said. A total of 888 substantial offenses were reported to the Clinton Police Department in 2013. That number is down from 1,116 reported in 2012.  [Read more…]

Knoxville man arrested after alleged burglary, running into tree

A Knoxville man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly broke into a house on Channel Way in Clinton and later injured his head by running into a tree.

The arrest report from the Clinton Police Department indicated that the residents of the home called 911 after Darron Christopher Hickman, 46, kicked in the front door, entered the house and “passed out.” At some point, Hickman got up and left the scene before officers arrived, and once they did, they located him a short time later in the nearby woods, where he was found sitting under a tree bleeding from the head. CPD investigates report of stun gun at school

On Monday, the Clinton Police Department investigated a report that a 12-year-old boy was bringing a stun gun to class at Clinton Elementary School.

No stun gun was found, but the student reportedly admitted that he had brought it to class in the past. That student was suspended, and his parents told police they plan to get rid of the stun gun.

The investigation turned up no evidence the device had been used at school, but officers did speak with another student who told them that the stun gun had been used on him at his request because he wanted to see what it felt like.

Two Anderson County men convicted of conspiring to manufacture 50 grams or more of methamphetamine were sentenced to lengthy prison terms this week, federal officials said Friday.

Officials estimate that the conspiracy resulted in the production of about 1,500 grams of methamphetamine.

Jeffrey Scott Braden, 37, of Vowell Mountain—the only one of 42 people indicted in the conspiracy to go to trial—received a mandatory life sentence on Thursday in a hearing before Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas A. Varlan in Knoxville, officials said.

Then, on Friday, Varlan sentenced conspiracy leader Lawrence “Stoney” Scriver, 46, of Lake City, to serve 30 years, U.S. Attorney William C. Killian said in a press release. [Read more…]

Clinton police contribute to arrests on federal charges after Burger King robbery

Two Lenoir City residents face federal charges for their roles in a Jan. 30 robbery of a Burger King in Lenoir City, and the Clinton Police Department contributed to the arrests, federal officials said Thursday.

In a press release, U.S. Attorney William C. Killian said Joshua Hayworth, 23, and Timothy E. Chudley, 35, both of Lenoir City, were charged Feb. 5 with federal Hobbs Act violations for their roles in the January robbery of the Burger King restaurant in Lenoir City.

Chudley was arrested in Knoxville on Feb. 5 without incident, and he appeared in federal court the same day, the press release said. Hayworth was arrested on state charges on Feb. 3 following a series of events which also resulted in federal carjacking charges against Hayworth. He will appear in federal court at a later date. Shoplifting at Walmart ends with box cutter threat

The Clinton Police Department is investigating a shoplifting incident at Walmart that quickly escalated to aggravated assault on Monday.

While shoplifting is nothing new at the big-box retailer, the store’s loss prevention associate called police to the store shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday after a man allegedly threatened him with a box cutter while stealing women’s underwear. The loss prevention associate confronted a man who was walking out the store’s front door with two packages of plus-sized women’s underwear valued at a little more than $25 without paying for them. Officer Dustin Hensley of the Clinton Police Department was recently recognized by the Governor’s Highway Safety Office for his persistence in keeping drunk drivers off the streets of Clinton, a press release said.

Hensley received a DUI/Impaired Driving Enforcement award for his work from Jan. 1 through Oct. 1, 2013, the release said. He was nominated by Lt. Larry Miller, who heads up CPD’s Governor’s Highway Safety Program.

The special award plaque was presented Dec. 9 during the GHSO joint network meeting at the Holiday Inn in Knoxville. [Read more…]

Feds, local law enforcement dismantle $17.5 million cocaine trafficking ring

Federal officials on Thursday announced they had dismantled a Knoxville-based cocaine ring that is accused of trafficking $17.5 million worth of drugs and distributing more than five kilograms of cocaine and 280 grams of crack cocaine.

A federal grand jury returned a 58-count indictment on Dec. 3 against 21 Knoxville residents, charging them with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and cocaine base, money laundering, and gun charges, U.S. Attorney William C. Killian said in a press release.

The 21 members of the alleged drug ring appeared in court before U.S. magistrate judges this week and entered pleas of not guilty to the charges in the indictment, Killian said. All of them have been ordered held without bond pending trial, which has been set for Feb. 11 in U.S. District Court in Knoxville.

Among the law enforcement agencies participating in the investigation were the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, Clinton Police Department, Oak Ridge Police Department, and Roane County Sheriff’s Department, Killian said. [Read more…]

A Clinton woman died in a three-car crash Friday evening on the Hon. William Everette Lewallen Memorial Bridge on Clinch Avenue near downtown Clinton.

The Clinton Police Department has identified the woman who died in a crash on Lewallen Bridge on Friday evening.

Angela Duncan Richardson, 40, of Clinton, died after she was thrown from a pickup truck driven by Kyle H. Anthony, 21, of Knoxville, the CPD said. Richardson was reportedly sitting behind the front seat of Anthony’s Chevy Silverado.

One other passenger in Anthony’s truck, Sean Richardson of Clinton, was taken to the hospital for treatment of possible injuries, and a fourth person in the truck was not injured despite being partially ejected from Anthony’s vehicle, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton. [Read more…]
