Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Series kicks off Saturday

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association opens its 2016-17 Chamber Series with Fandango! on Saturday. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 8, at the Pollard Auditorium in Oak Ridge.

“The most exciting new group on Chicago’s musical scene, Fandango! is a toe-tappingly spicy mix of Latin, Spanish, Sephardic, Balkan, and classical sounds founded by four multi-award-winning, globe-trotting virtuosi who hail from Spain, the USA, former Yugoslavia, and the UK, and who have played, separately and together, on the world’s most prestigious stages,” a press release said.

Made of two husband-and-wife virtuoso duos, Fandango! features flautist Eugenia Moliner, guitarist Denis Azabagic, violinist Desiree Ruhstrat, and cellist David Cunliffe. The quartet will perform an eclectic mix of genres, including familiar favorites by Vivaldi and Boccherini, and music by American composer Alan Thomas, Macedonian composer Miroslav Tadic, and more, the press release said.

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Series continues Saturday with the initial U.S. appearance of one of the Slovak Republic’s premier chamber groups, the Suchon Wind Quintet, and pianist Michiko Otaki. The concert will be at 7:30 pm Saturday, February 21, in the ORAU Pollard Auditorium.

The group’s namesake, Eugen Suchoň, is one of the major classical composers of the 20th century, and his work made a significant contribution to the crystallization of Slovak national music. The Quintet had taken part in numerous European and international music festivals. [Read more…]

Chamber Series concert with Zukerman rescheduled

The Chamber Series concert that had been scheduled for this evening has been rescheduled due to illness.

The concert will feature world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman. It had been scheduled for this evening at the Pollard Auditorium. But it’s been rescheduled for 3 p.m. May 11 at Pollard.

It’s the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s final Chamber Series concert of the season.

ORCMA’s last chamber concert of season features world-renowned flutist

ORSO Eugenia Zukerman Chamber Concert

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s final Chamber Series concert of the season will feature world-renowned flutist Eugenia Zukerman at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Pollard Auditorium.

Zukerman has been lauded not only for her playing, but also for her adventurous programming. Here’s what the The Sunday Telegram said: “Few major instrumentalists offer anything comparable to the intelligence and breadth of programming that she brings to her concerts.”

Her guest appearances have included engagements with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic, the China Philharmonic, and the Israel, Moscow, Prague, and Scottish chamber orchestras.

Recognized with an Emmy nomination as an important broadcast journalist, Eugenia Zukerman interviewed and created more than 300 portraits as an arts correspondent for the CBS Sunday Morning program. Her interview subjects included Edgar Meyer. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Series concert on Saturday features the Doric String Quartet. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at Oak Ridge Associated Universities Pollard Auditorium.

The Doric members are Alex Redington and Jonathan Stone, violins; Hélène Clément, viola; and John Myerscough, cello. The program includes Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat, Opus 76 No. 4  “Sunrise”; Leos Janacek’s String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer Sonata”; and the Franz Schubert Quartet in G (D. 887).

The group spends time sharing their talents, techniques, and musical wisdom with young musicians in the area. Oak Ridge Symphony cellist Alicia Randisi-Hooker and her “Cello Leap Studio” is making arrangements for the quartet’s weeklong residency here. [Read more…]

Chamber Music concert Saturday features Cumberland Piano Trio

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s Chamber Series will present the Cumberland Piano Trio at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pollard Auditorium.

The trio includes Susan Eddlemon on violin, Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Director Dan Allcott on cello, and Emi Kagawa on piano. Scott Eddlemon, ORSO percussionist, will be assisting in the performance.

ORCMA opens season with ‘Double Dose of Awesomeness’ in October

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s 70th musical season, “Excellence to the Second Degree, Bringing you Music that Matters,” will offer Oak Ridgers performances from the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Series of concerts, and the Oak Ridge Chorus.

The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Dan Allcott, will open the season in October with “A Double Dose of Awesomeness” featuring music by Johannes Brahms with violinist Wei Tsun Chang and cellist Wesley Baldwin performing the Brahms’ Double Concerto. That performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the performing arts center at Oak Ridge High School. [Read more…]
