Youth Showcase to benefit Child Advocacy Center on Nov. 2

Singing, dancing, and comedy—coupled with great food and celebrity entertainment—will kick off the first Youth Showcase on Nov. 2, a benefit for the Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County.

The fundraiser for CACACT will feature some of the area’s most talented youth, a press release said. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at the High Places Community Church in Historic Grove Center in Oak Ridge.

The young performers include ballet dancer Taylor Gober and singer/songwriters Nic Cagle, Taylor Kress (who has also appeared on WDVX), and Lara Manning. Two voice majors from UT, Breyon Lattrell Wess and Taylor Stone, and other local singers Maddie and Sydney Buckner will also perform. [Read more…]

Children’s Museum Gala features Jamaican dinner, steel drums

The 11th annual gala at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge on Dec. 7 will feature the flavors and rhythms of Jamaica.

The evening will feature a steel drum band, a Jamaican meal, auctions, the Oak Ridge High School Chorus, and an ORHS String Quartet.

The gala, which starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, will benefit the Children’s Museum. This year’s theme is “Jamaica: Rhythm ‘n Paradise,” a press release said.

Guests will be entertained by the steel drum band Carib Sounds and island dancers, the press release said.

Anderson County Hall of Fame dinner, ceremony on Thursday

The Class of 2012 that will be inducted into the Anderson County Hall of Fame on Thursday includes an athlete, coach, educator, elected official, military member, minister, visionary, and business and community leaders.

One person will also be recognized for lifetime achievement.

The sixth annual dinner and induction ceremony starts at the First Baptist Church of Clinton at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with a silent auction, followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and 7 p.m. induction ceremony.

Joan Cronan, women’s athletic director and former interim vice chancellor and athletic director of the University of Tennessee, will serve as the keynote speaker, a press release said.

Here is the Class of 2012:

  • Nikki Caldwell — athlete
  • Sam Dean — ministry
  • Keys Fillauer — K-12 educator
  • Lester Fox — business leader
  • Lawrence Hahn — coach/youth mentor
  • Helen Hammer — visionary

  • Randy McNally — elected official
  • Bear Stephenson — lifetime achievement.
