The 11th annual gala at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge on Dec. 7 will feature the flavors and rhythms of Jamaica.
The evening will feature a steel drum band, a Jamaican meal, auctions, the Oak Ridge High School Chorus, and an ORHS String Quartet.
The gala, which starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, will benefit the Children’s Museum. This year’s theme is “Jamaica: Rhythm ‘n Paradise,” a press release said.
Guests will be entertained by the steel drum band Carib Sounds and island dancers, the press release said.
“With roots deep into the Caribbean, Carib Sounds brings the fresh sound of steel drum music that appeals to audiences everywhere,” the release said. “Its rhythms will take guests on a musical journey to the islands with calypso, soca, and reggae beats.”
Chef Andras Bartha of Caramella Catering will prepare the Jamaican meal using nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice to accent the island dishes.
The evening will begin with cocktails, Jamaican appetizers, and the silent auction. The celebration continues with dinner and a live auction with Clinton auctioneer Bear Stephenson, the release said.
Matt Shafer Powell, the news director at WUOT-FM in Knoxville, will serve as master of ceremonies. Guests are invited to dress in Carribean island attire.
This event will support the museum’s mission of educating children of all ages through play. Through its interactive exhibits, summer camps, year-round classes, concerts, and special events, the museum offers a range of activities as a family-friendly regional museum providing hands-on experiences and life-long learning, the release said.
Local businesses, organizations, and individuals have sponsored the gala at levels ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
Knoxville Area Model Railroaders will be on hand to run the holiday trains in the outdoor train garden, as well as helping with set up and bartending at the event.
Tickets are $125 per person, with a portion of that tax-deductible.
