Beauty of Giving: Free haircuts offered

The Atomic City Sportsmen Club and Oak Valley Baptist Church have invited students to kick off the new school year with a fresh free haircut and style during the annual Beauty of Giving event today (Sunday, July 25).

Participating barber and beauty shops will open at 2 p.m. and provide haircuts and styles to children on a first-come basis, a press release said. Participating shops include High Maintenance, The Pro’s 2, Fade to Black, and Fresh Master Cuts in Oak Ridge.

An event advertisement said the event, Beauty of Giving, is from 2 to 7:30 p.m.

Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast is Monday in Oak Ridge

The Atomic City Sportsmen Club is having its 31st annual Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast on Monday morning. The community is invited, a press release said.

The Breakfast will be held on Monday, January 21, at Spurgeon Chapel AME Zion Church at 100 South Benedict Avenue in Oak Ridge. The program begins at 8 a.m., and this year’s keynote speaker will be Judy Gooch, owner of Judy Gooch Interiors of Oak Ridge.

Gooch has been active in community affairs for the past 25 years.

In 2005, she was appointed to serve on the Tennessee Board of Regents by Governor Phil Bredesen. In 2008, Tennessee State University, formerly known as Tennessee A & I, requested that honorary degrees be awarded to the university’s fourteen Freedom Riders from the early 1960s. [Read more…]

Atomic City Sportsmen Club has golf tournament Saturday

The Atomic City Sportsmen Club has its 16th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday.

The tournament is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Centennial Golf Club at 101 Centennial Boulevard in Oak Ridge.

It’s a best ball-shotgun start, an event flyer said. The entry fee is $75 per person. It’s $90 the day of the event.

The tournament includes lunch, range balls, a goodie bag, and door prizes, the flyer said.

There are at least three events scheduled on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 16).

Atomic City Sportsmen Club hosts 28th Annual Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast Program

The Atomic City Sportsmen invite the community to the 28th annual Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast. The Breakfast will be held on Monday, January 16, at the Oak Valley Baptist Church, 191 Hampton Road in Oak Ridge.

The program begins at 8 a.m., and this year’s keynote speaker will be the Reverend Reneé Kesler, president and chief executive officer of the Beck Cultural Exchange Center Inc. in Knoxville.

Beck was established in 1975 as a primary repository of black history and culture in East Tennessee and remains dedicated to researching, collecting, conserving, preserving, and exhibiting works of art, writings, artifacts, memorabilia, and other evidence of contributions relating to the history and culture of African Americans in this region while fostering and promoting educational, artistic, and cultural activities and experiences, a press release said. The Atomic City Sportsmen Club has its 15th Annual Golf Tournament on June 18 in Oak Ridge.

The golf tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. June 18 at Centennial Golf Club at 101 Centennial Boulevard.

The entry fee is $75 per person and $90 on the day of the event (strictly enforced).

There is lunch, range balls, a goodie bag, and door prizes.

Knox County Commissioner Sam McKenzie will be the featured speaker at the 27th annual Martin Luther King Fellowship Breakfast.

The breakfast has been organized by the Atomic City Sportsmen. Everyone is welcome to attend. It’s scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Monday, January 19, at the Oak Valley Baptist Church at 194 Hampton Road in Oak Ridge. Blues festival tonight at Grove Theater

A blues festival at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge tonight features guitarist Charlie Morris and his band along with three guests: pianist Wendel Werner, vocalist Katy Free, and reggae band Natti Love Joys.

The Fourth Annual “Coming Home Blue Festival” starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 10:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.

Barbecue and “other assorted goodies” will be served starting at 4 p.m.

Festival sponsors include the Atomic City Sportsmen Club.

The Grove Theater is located at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge.
