Three dozen baseball teams played at fields in Knoxville and Oak Ridge this weekend in the 2015 NABF World Series.

The NABF is the National Amateur Baseball Federation.

The tournament play included Junior Division (16U, or 16 and younger) and High School Division (17U, or 17 and younger).

The baseball tournament was from Thursday, July 16, to Sunday, July 19, and it included teams from the United States and Canada. [Read more…]

The NABF World Series baseball tournament started in Oak Ridge on Thursday. Oak Ridge is one of the communities in the area hosting games between teams from the United States and Canada.

Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch tossed the first pitch to open the series in Oak Ridge.

The Oak Ridge baseball fields are being used from Thursday, July 16, through Sunday, July 19, for the NABF World Series baseball games. Knoxville is also hosting games.

The Oak Ridge High School Summer Team plays in Oak Ridge at 12:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. [Read more…]

Velo Classic on July 25, 26 to feature bike races, Wellness Fest, Kids Bike Rodeo

A bicycle racing event in Oak Ridge on July 25 and 26 will feature three types of races, a Family Wellness Festival, and a Kids Bike Rodeo.

It’s the URS-CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR) Oak Ridge Velo Classic.

Three types of races that include 13 categories of competitors will be offered. The road races and time trials will be staged from the parking area of the East Tennessee Technology Park beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, July 25, and the criterium races will be held at the Horizon Center beginning at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, July 26. This year’s criterium races—which are very much like “NASCAR on bikes”—have been designated the state championships by the Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association.

The race promoters expect almost 400 competitors for the two-day event. The Comfort Inn is the official race hotel and is offering special rates to out-of-town competitors. Early race packet pickup will be held at a reception on Friday evening, July 24, poolside at the Comfort Inn. [Read more…]

LAFOLLETTE—A LaFollette boater remains in serious condition following a boating accident that happened on Norris Lake late Thursday night, authorities said.

Just before midnight, Jimmy Arnold, a 52-year-old white male from LaFollette, was operating an open bow 24-foot Chaparral boat on Norris Lake when the accident occurred just downstream of Shanghai Marina, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said.

According to witnesses on a nearby houseboat, Arnold, who was the vessel’s sole occupant, was headed to their location at Heatherly’s point when the vessel ran aground, sending it about 69 feet onto the point. Witnesses onboard the houseboat dialed 911. [Read more…]

Golf tournament to benefit Free Medical Clinic

Free Medical Clinic

A golf tournament in August will benefit the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.

It’s the 16th Annual Summer Golf Challenge for the Free Medical Clinic, and it will be held on Saturday, August 15, at the Oak Ridge Country Club. The tournament has a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start, and it is hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority of Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge Hoofers Golf Club, and the Oak Ridge Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

The Free Medical Clinic is a nonprofit medical group that provides medical care at no cost to residents of Anderson, Roane, and Morgan Counties who do not have insurance or cannot afford care because of low income. The clinic is staffed primarily by volunteers and relies on donations from individuals, churches, and local organizations for financial support. Although the number of patients seeking care has increased significantly in recent months and donations have not kept pace, the clinic continues to serve as many as possible with the resources at hand. Tickets are $5 each.

“Please come and support the team!” organizers said.

Recently-graduated Anderson County High School running back Matt Fox, a punishing runner who led the state in rushing each of the past two seasons, is one of six East Tennessee athletes who will be honored on August 4 during the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Oak Ridge High School tight end Darel Middleton, a highly sought-after recruit, announced on Twitter on Monday that he has committed to play college football at Arizona State University, choosing the Sun Devils over Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and Oregon.

Middleton, who also plays defensive end, will be a senior this season and will begin his senior campaign at home against Clinton on August 21. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Municipal Pool hosts swim challenge

The Oak Ridge Municipal Swimming pool is having a swim challenge.

The pool is open 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Monday through Friday for lap swimming the 100-meter course only, a press release said. If you would like to participate, come swim the 100-meter course and post your mileage.

Last year Claudia and Tom Raudorf, Jim Brant, Christy Buzzard, and Anne Roush all completed the 50-mile-plus swim by posting their laps on the Swimming Down the Clinch poster at the pool.

Oak Ridge’s Sarah Kate Rogers continued her memorable run to USRowing’s 2015 Youth Nationals, overcoming windy course conditions and formidable talent to reach the Grand Final of the Women’s Youth sculling singles (WY1x). The Youth Nationals were held June 12-14, in Bradenton, Florida.

Rogers qualified for the Youth Nationals as a result of her victory in the USRowing Southeastern Regionals in May.

Her path to the National Grand Finals was not without significant drama. In her opening heat, she tangled with lane buoys early in the race, and despite a ferocious comeback, finished a narrow fourth. This forced her to the repechage, a last chance to qualify for the semifinals. She responded to that challenge, moving through her opponents to grab the lead at the halfway point and holding off a furious challenge from Rachel Pierce of South Jersey Rowing Club. On short rest, Rogers then out-sprinted Shelby Johnson of Capital Rowing Club in the semifinal to finish second and qualify for the Grand Final. [Read more…]

Green named girls basketball coach, one half of husband-wife coaching duo

Paige Green has been named the new girls basketball coach at Oak Ridge High School, making her one half of a husband-wife coaching duo. Green’s husband, Aaron Green, is the boys basketball coach.

The appointment was announced Wednesday and went into effect immediately. Green, who has an impressive résumé as a player and has coached middle school and AAU basketball, will replace David Scott, who announced his decision to resign in late May. Scott cited family reasons after a second stint as coach.

It’s not unprecedented to have a husband-wife coaching duo. Aaron Green said he knows of two other similar coaching couples, the McWilliams at Upperman High School near Cookeville and Keith and Jennifer Galloway at Hardin Valley Academy. [Read more…]

Girls Inc. Elite Awards honors Nikki Caldwell on July 15

Girls Inc. will honor Nikki Caldwell on Wednesday, July 15. Caldwell is an Oak Ridge native, former University of Tennessee basketball all star, and current women’s basketball head coach at Louisiana State University.

She is also an “elite alumni” of Girls Inc., a press release said. The awards will also honor current elite member Semaj Clark of Oak Ridge, the release said.

The inaugural Girls Inc. Elite Awards ceremony is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville. All proceeds will go directly into expanding current programming to improve program content while increasing the number of girls served, the press release said. [Read more…]
