Jewell Chappell Hicks

Jewell Chappell Hicks, age 81, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 13.

She was born Sept. 19, 1931, in Lake Toxaway, N.C., and moved to Oak Ridge in 1948.

She worked for McCrory’s 5&10 and Southern Bell as a telephone operator before marrying Gene Hicks on April 6, 1950.

For the next 63 years they lived in Oak Ridge, where she raised a family, enjoyed gardening, and loved to cook and sew. Jewell loved music, dancing, clogging, and was an active member of the Rambling Rebels Square Dance Club.

John Allister “Jack” Smith

John Allister (Jack) Smith, age 92, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 10, in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Mr. Smith was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, a son of the late George Smith and Mary Ann Sievewright Smith.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Henry Smith, and two sisters, Phyllis Schaab and Dorothy Raley; and a daughter, Judith Ann Greer, and son, Michael Gerald Smith, both of Oak Ridge. His second wife, Ann Parker Smith, and stepdaughter, Teresa Page, of Knoxville, also preceded him in death. [Read more…]

Archie Michael (Injun) Bradley, age 65, of Oak Ridge, stepped into Heaven’s gates on Feb. 5.

He was born Jan. 11, 1948, in Sylva, N.C., the son of Harry Lee and Lorena Bradley. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

He had a great love for his family and was a very proud father and grandfather.

He was a 1966 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and played football for Jefferson Junior High and Oak Ridge High School. In addition to sports, he loved the outdoors and was known for his large summer gardens and his love of jokes.

Tara Snellings, age 43, of Lake City, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, at her residence.

She loved playing basketball, softball, and was a huge fan of the Washington Redskins. Tara was a big lover of animals.

She was preceded in death by her father, John H. Snellings; daughter, Amber Marie Snellings; and grandparents, Archie and Katherine Snellings, and Howard and Lassie Tweed. [Read more…]

James A. Musick, age 90, a resident of Knoxville, died Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Bridge Health Care Center in Rockwood.

Mr. Musick was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Cleveland, Va.

James served his country in the United States Army during World War II. While serving, he received several medals, citations, ribbons, and accommodations.

Jimmy (Jim) Smith age 71, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, at his home surrounded by his family.

Jim was born July 7, 1941, in Eagan, Tenn., to the late Elmer Gene and Sylvia Geneva Stocks Smith.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy and the United States Army. He loved to fish and camp, but most of all he loved watching his granddaughter Brandy Neal play softball. Jim enjoyed listening to his son-in-law sing and watch him perform. Jim also loved just being with and spending time with his family. [Read more…]

Mona Augusta Manning, 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 7, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Chattanooga, one of six children born to Robert and Mona Warters Manning.

She was a long time member and organist at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and active with various church guilds. Miss Manning served as a Dominican sister and teacher for over 30 years. She loved music and was a master organist. She enjoyed crocheting and the many valued friendships made over the years. [Read more…]

Winnie Elizabeth Sexton, 97, of the Solway Community, passed away at NHC in Oak Ridge on Feb. 8.

She was born on Oct. 24, 1915, in Scott County to parents James H. and Elizabeth “Elsa” Kircher Phillips.

Winnie had worked as a secretary with Union Carbide Corporation and a member of Solway Baptist Church. She loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed gardening and canning.

She was preceded in death by husband, D.L. “Doc” Sexton; son, James R. (Bobby) Sexton; brothers, Eugene, Hubert, and Crawford Phillips; and sister-in-law, Charity Ellis Phillips. [Read more…]

Hazel Virginia Waldo Clifton, age 94, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, at Emeritus Senior Living.

She was born Aug. 10, 1918, in Spring City, the daughter of Perry and Vinny Kern Waldo.

Mrs. Clifton was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church, and before her health began to fail, she was active in many of the church activities and sang in the choir. She enjoyed gardening and knitting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Robert Rue Clifton in 1998; daughter, Janet Marie Clifton Mason in 2006; and son-in-law, Richard Timothy Greene in 2004. [Read more…]

Henry Vann Burris

Henry Vann Burris, age 88, a resident of the Dyllis Community in Roane County, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Scott Ball.

Mr. Burris was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Oliver Springs. He lived in Oak Ridge and Knoxville for several years. He has lived in Dyllis for the past three years.

Before his retirement in 1981, he owned and operated the Oak Ridge Yellow Cab Company for 35 years. Following his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.
