John Allister (Jack) Smith, age 92, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 10, in Panama City Beach, Fla.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 26, 1920, in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, a son of the late George Smith and Mary Ann Sievewright Smith.
He was preceded in death by his brother, George Henry Smith, and two sisters, Phyllis Schaab and Dorothy Raley; and a daughter, Judith Ann Greer, and son, Michael Gerald Smith, both of Oak Ridge. His second wife, Ann Parker Smith, and stepdaughter, Teresa Page, of Knoxville, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Smith grew up in Salida, Colo., and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder as an electrical engineer. He married Lois Elizabeth McDonough on June 27, 1943. They moved to Oak Ridge during World War II and had five children between 1944 and 1954. He later married Ann Parker of Knoxville in 1974.
The Atomic Energy Commission at the K-25 facility in Oak Ridge employed Mr. Smith for 54 years. He enjoyed his retirement years on the beach in Panama City and was an active board member of the Coral Reef Condominium Association. He was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed collecting coins and model cars. He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of the Elks.
Survivors include his first wife, Lois Elizabeth Smith; three sons, Bruce Allister Smith of Atlanta, Ga., Gary Anthony Smith and wife Senah Keplinger Smith of Rome, Ga., and Alan Leonard Smith of Oak Ridge; his grandchildren Michael John Smith and Amy Greer of Oak Ridge; Anthony Smith and wife Jennifer of Belvidere, Ill., and Kristie Finney and husband David of Jasper, Ga.; stepdaughter, Cynthia Nichols and husband Thomas of Knoxville; and seven-great grandchildren and a special friend, Anne McKinnon of Panama City Beach, Fla., also survive him.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. followed by a service at Weatherford Mortuary. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
