Food City will have a grand re-opening ceremony from 5-7 p.m. January 3. A ribbon-cutting has been scheduled for 6 p.m.
There will be a flag retirement ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 4.
Food City is at 1005 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge.
Clinton man receives Folklife Heritage Award; distinguished artists honored include Vince Gill, Amy Grant

A Clinton folklorist was was one of 10 people to be presented with a 2017 Governor’s Arts Award, Tennessee’s highest honor in the arts.
Folklorist Bob Fulcher of Clinton won a Folklife Heritage Award. He is the first folklorist to receive the Tennessee Folklife Heritage Award. Fulcher is the park manager of the Cumberland Trail State Scenic Trail.
Among the distinguished artists honored are Kallen Esperian, Amy Grant, and Vince Gill, a press release said.
The awards were announced Thursday by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and First Lady Crissy Haslam.
The recipients will be acknowledged during a private ceremony in March 2017 at the Tennessee Residence. Awards are made in three categories: Distinguished Artist, Arts Leadership, and Folklife Heritage. [Read more…]
Waste Connections suspends glass recycling

Waste Connections of Tennessee has announced that beginning January 1, 2017, they will suspend glass recycling for their curbside pickup program in Oak Ridge in an effort to remain “dedicated to maintaining a healthy and strong recycling program for all residents,” a press release said.
“Markets for recyclable materials ebb and flow, and changes in glass markets have made this change in service necessary,” Doug McGill, municipal marketing manager for Waste Connections Inc., said in a recent letter to Oak Ridge officials. “By removing glass from curbside collection, we will preserve the overall integrity of our recycling program.”
A City of Oak Ridge press release said McGill went on to say that the processor of recyclables in Knoxville will stop accepting single-stream recycling glass after the first of the year, as will most processing companies across the country. [Read more…]
Government building holiday closings

Most government buildings at the county and municipal levels will be closed Friday, December 23, and Monday December 26, for the Christmas holiday.
That includes Clinton City Hall, the Anderson County Courthouse, Rocky Top City Hall, and the Oak Ridge Municipal Building.
Many of those buildings will also be closed on Monday, January 2, 2017, for the New Year’s holiday as well.
Construction starts on Dick’s Sporting Goods, T.J. Maxx

Construction has started on Dick’s Sporting Goods and T.J. Maxx at Main Street Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge officials said Wednesday. The city has posted photos and videos of the construction, which is near Walmart in the area of the former Sears department store at the former Oak Ridge Mall.
Main Street Oak Ridge is the redevelopment of the 58-acre former mall site. With the exception of Belk and JCPenney, the enclosed mall space has been demolished.
Eight new stores are expected to be ready at Main Street Oak Ridge by late spring or summer, a development executive said in November. [Read more…]
Children’s Museum supports fire relief efforts in Gatlinburg

The generosity of Gatlinburg merchants in providing an auction package for the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge Gala resulted, in return, in generosity from the Children’s Museum and Gala attendees, who opened their wallets to support Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after the devastating Chimney Tops fire.
Guests at the Gala Evening at the Children’s Museum on December 2 contributed $6,260 for the fire relief effort as Clinton auctioneer Bear Stephenson extended the auction of a Gatlinburg activities package to accept contributions for organizations supporting the community and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after the wildfire that spread from the park into Gatlinburg earlier that week.
Martha Hart first raised the idea of donating to fire relief efforts by donating the proceeds from the Gatlinburg activities package back to the community. Hart, whose family owns Karen’s Jewelers, was helping manage the silent auction with her family as a volunteer at the Gala and suggested moving the Gatlinburg activities package from the silent to the live auction. Holiday Schedule: Waste Connections Convenience Center
Waste Connections of Tennessee will close the Convenience Center at 400 Warehouse Road at noon on Saturday, December 24, in observance of Christmas. The Convenience Center will reopen on Monday, December 26.
In addition, the Convenience Center will be closed all day Sunday, January 1, 2017, in observance of the New Year’s holiday. [Read more…]
Norris names interim city manager
An interim city manager has been named in Norris, according to The Norris Bulletin.
Long-time resident Joe Deatherage, who has a long record of community service and charitable work, was picked unanimously during a special Norris City Council meeting on Monday, the weekly publication said. Council moved quickly to fill the position left vacant by last week’s decision to replace the Norris city manager.
Deatherage, who retired from Lockheed-Martin after 30 years working in Oak Ridge, will serve temporarily until a permanent city manager can be chosen, The Norris Bulletin said. Deatherage said he would not be a candidate for the post beyond the next few months.

Chadwick, Emch are Roane State’s 2016 Outstanding Alumni

A healthcare expert and a leading geospatial scientist are Roane State’s Outstanding Alumni for 2016.
The recipients are Lisa Chadwick of Knoxville, director of risk management for Functional Pathways in Knoxville, and Whitney Emch with the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
Chadwick graduated magna cum laude from Roane State Community College in 1991 with an associate degree in nursing. She also holds a bachelor’s degree from Berry College and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of St. Francis. [Read more…]
Secret City Pocket Guide unveiled in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of Oak Ridge, DOE
The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association has unveiled a new guide to the historic sites of the “Secret City” of Oak Ridge. The Manhattan Project, Secret City Pocket Guide was prepared by the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association in cooperation with the National Park Service and the Oak Ridge Schools.
The 44-page guide measures only 4 inches by 7 inches in size, so it easily fits in your pocket, a press release said. It tells the story of the Manhattan Project’s first major nuclear site, Oak Ridge—created less than a year after the Pearl Harbor attack. The guide is priced at $5.
The new guide is packed with historic photos, an introduction to the new national historical park, a driving map of Oak Ridge’s heritage sites, and fascinating factoids on the people who built one of the most amazing technical achievements in history, the press release said.
The guide’s author, Martin McBride, is a member of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association Board and a retired nuclear safety division director from the U.S. Department of Energy. [Read more…]

Event aimed to inspire and educate possible STEM careers
ORAU recently hosted STEM Stories, an event aimed to inspire students of all ages to begin exploring the many careers available in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields.
Hosted at ORAU’s Pollard Technology Conference Center, the event featured live talks by Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Lonnie Love, pictured above, and Ian Anderson, pictured below. The two described the journey each had in achieving successful STEM careers. [Read more…]
