Based in Oak Ridge, PSI announces new ownership

Protection Strategies Inc., which is headquartered in Oak Ridge, has announced that former President and Chief Operating Officer Sean P. Williams is now the majority owner and chief executive officer of the company. Bobby Beaty, who acquired ownership of the company in 2012, will remain a minority partner in the firm and acting in an executive advisory role while taking partial retirement, a press release said.

“Not only do Sean and I share the same vision of PSI, Sean will help ensure that we maintain the values, standards, and relationships of the past while taking the company into the future,” Beaty said.

PSI was founded in 1998, and since that time, the company has added new services and expanded its scope of work throughout the country by specializing in integrated security solutions (cyber, physical, personnel, information, and communications), and high-threat asset protection including special nuclear materials (SNR) and specialized support services, the press release said.

Today, PSI has grown into a company with eight prime federal contracts and various subcontracts with clients that include the National Nuclear Security Administration, U.S. Department of Energy, United States Coast Guard, Department of Defense, Department of State, Health and Human Services, Environmental Protective Agency, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Western Area Power Authority, Bonneville Power Association, state and local governments, and large commercial entities within the United States and abroad. CLINTON—Cassen Jackson-Garrison, a former police officer and professional football player, has agreed to plead guilty to statutory rape and official misconduct, and he will be sentenced to two years of supervised probation, officials said this week.

Jackson-Garrison, 32, had a plea agreement hearing in Anderson County Criminal Court in Clinton on Monday. He is a former Oak Ridge Police Department officer who once played football for Vanderbilt University and the Kansas City Chiefs.

  The Independence Day fireworks in Oak Ridge are scheduled to start at dark, around 9:45 p.m., at Alvin K. Bissell Park on Tuesday, July 4. The fireworks show is sponsored by the City of Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge Community Band, now in its 73rd year, will perform prior to the fireworks, a press release said. The concert is free, but donations are accepted by the band to help cover the cost of equipment and other expenses. The music is expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 4. Anyone planning to attend is advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket for outdoor seating, the press release said. A safety zone will be established by the Oak Ridge Fire Department. The National Park Service will move its visitor center and offices in Oak Ridge to the Children’s Museum in October, officials said Friday.

The National Park Service has a visitor center and offices in Oak Ridge as part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, a three-site park that was established in November 2015 after years of advocacy.

The visitor center and offices are now located at the American Museum of Science and Energy, or AMSE, on South Tulane Avenue. But that museum is closing as part of a land transfer related to the Main Street Oak Ridge development.

“We have been so fortunate to have been based at AMSE for the first 18 months of this new national historical park,” said Kris Kirby, Manhattan Project National Historical Park superintendent. “The staff and volunteers have been outstanding partners providing space and backup support with all of our activities. We consider the entire City of Oak Ridge to be part of the park and will continue to offer programming in multiple locations throughout the area.” [Read more…]

The three were found dead during a welfare check at 101 Oak Lane at about 8:03 a.m. Thursday. They have been identified as:

  • Michael Deuschle, age 49

  • Chelsea Kessel, age 24

The three adults found dead on Oak Lane on Thursday morning each had a single gunshot wound, authorities said.

The three were found dead during a welfare check at 101 Oak Lane at about 8:03 a.m. Thursday. They have been identified as:

  • Michael Deuschle, age 49
  • Tessa Deuschle, age 43
  • Chelsea Kessel, age 24

The city said a preliminary investigation leads officers to believe that the females were shot first at close range, and then the man shot himself.

Detectives with the Oak Ridge Police Department believe this to be an isolated incident, and citizens do not need to be alarmed, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release. Officers do not believe there are any additional victims in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Manhattan Project program: Secrecy, Security, Spies at Turnpike Gatehouse on June 23

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park will present a program on Friday, June 23, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Turnpike Gatehouse. The program will give visitors some insight to what life was like in Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project with all the security, the need for secrecy, and the worry of spies, a press release said.

This program is free and open to the public. Parking is limited, so please try to carpool if possible, the press release said.

The Gatehouse is located at 2900 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Visitors can access the Turnpike Gatehouse from Oak Ridge by following the Oak Ridge Turnpike west as if you are leaving town. Parking will be next to the Gatehouse on the north side of the road. [Read more…]

The Green McAdoo Cultural Organization will be hosting its first Jazz on the Hill concert series on Saturday, July 1. The group performing will be Brian Clay and Friends.

The event is open to the public, and you can bring your families, blankets, and lawn chairs, a press release said. Performance times will be 5:30-8:30 p.m.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new maurices women’s clothing store at Main Street Oak Ridge on Friday, June 23.

It’s one of eight new stores expected to open soon at Main Street Oak Ridge, the 58-acre project to redevelop the former Oak Ridge Mall. The other seven stores are Dick’s Sporting Goods, Electronic Express, PetSmart, Rack Room Shoes, rue21, T.J. Maxx, and Ulta.

The maurices store is at 333 Main Street, near Belk. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, June 23. The ribbon-cutting is at 9:15 a.m. It’s being hosted by the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce. [Read more…]

‘Natural Synergy’: Photography exhibit celebrating impact of naturalized citizens on Manhattan Project opens Thursday

The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce will host “Natural Synergy,” a photography exhibition focusing on some of the Manhattan Project’s most prominent scientists who left their homeland to be become naturalized U.S. citizens. The month-long exhibit will open on Thursday, June 15, with a reception starting at 4:30 p.m. The photo exhibit is sponsored by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, and Explore Oak Ridge.

Beginning in the 1930s, there was active persecution of religious minorities and political opponents, a press release said. As a result, many leading scientists, philosophers, and academics fled to the West, the press release said. A number of the refugees later joined the Manhattan Project, and the large number of refugees and immigrants working on the Manhattan Project gave the American nuclear program an international character unusual in such a top-secret program.

The “Natural Synergy” photography exhibit opens the day before a naturalization ceremony for new United States citizens on Friday, June 16, that is hosted by the National Park Service and United States Citizenship and Immigration Service. That ceremony is open to the public and starts at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge.

Join a park ranger for a bike ride on the North Boundary Greenway to see how the former communities of the area have changed over the past 70 years.  The Manhattan Project National Historical Park will present a free program on Saturday, June 17, at 10 a.m.

The program will begin at the Turnpike Gatehouse and travel down Quarry Trail, a press release said.

“Along the ride, we will explore the former communities that were here before the Manhattan Project,” the press release said. “Rangers will stop several times along the bike ride to point out the rich history that is found within the Oak Ridge area.”

‘When Good Trees Go Bad’: Lecture & walk at UT Arboretum on Thursday

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society will present a short talk and lead a walk on Thursday, June 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the UT Arboretum Auditorium at 901 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.

Led by Forester Jeff Holt, the short talk and walk will focus on the impact of disease and damage as observed in trees on the walk, a press release said. Holt will discuss how these issues relate to tree hazard mortality risk as they may relate to management and safety of the trees. During the walk, Holt will lead the group around the Arboretum to discuss affected trees, the press release said.

Celebrating 52 years in 2017, this program is one of many activities that will be offered this year by the UT Arboretum Society. The program is co-sponsored by the UT Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center.

The Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, is one of 10 outdoor laboratories located throughout the state as part of the UT AgResearch system. AgResearch is a division of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Institute of Agriculture also provides instruction, research and public service through the UT College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, UT AgResearch, and UT Extension offices, with locations in every county in the state.
