Thirteen local restaurants are donating a portion of their sales to Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties on Monday.

“The weather is finally warming up, so come enjoy any of the restaurants’ outdoor seating, or maybe even get a meal to go for a picnic,” a press release said.

The featured restaurant for May is Hoskins restaurant at 111 North Main Street in Clinton.

“This staple of the Clinton community has long been a supporter of worthwhile causes in our area, and ADFAC is thrilled they have chosen to work with them as well!” the press release said. [Read more…]

Manhattan Project Park: Hike with a Ranger on Saturday

Join park rangers for a hike along the Cedar Hill Greenway in Oak Ridge on Saturday, May 12.

The hike, which is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Saturday, will begin at Cedar Hill Park, the former location of Cedar Hill Elementary School.

Along the hike, rangers will discuss the early school system of Oak Ridge, early shopping centers, and housing in the Clinton Engineer Works, a press release said.

This 2.5-mile hike is considered moderately difficult, and some parts of the trail can wash out after a strong storm. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate footwear, insect repellent, and sunscreen, and bring drinking water, the press release said. [Read more…]

There is a free child passenger seat checkpoint in Oak Ridge on Saturday.

The checkpoint will be held at Oak Ridge Fire Department Station Number 2, located at 609 Oak Ridge Turnpike, near Home Depot. Parents and caregivers are invited to stop by anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. with no need to pre-register, a press release said.

The public checkpoint is hosted by the Oak Ridge Police Department, Oak Ridge Fire Department, and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. [Read more…]

Friends of Oak Ridge Library has Book Sale this week

Friends of the Oak Ridge Library will have its Spring 2018 Book Sale this week.

The Book Sale is scheduled from Thursday, May 10, to Sunday, May 13, in the Oak Ridge Public Library Auditorium.

The sale will include fiction and nonfiction books, magazines, audiovisual materials, and other publications covering almost every subject, a press release said. Most titles are 50 cents or $1 each. Titles withdrawn from the Library are half price Thursday through Saturday.

There will be a preview sale for members from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening, May 10. Memberships will be available at the door; they are $5 per individual and $10 for a family. (Scanning devices cannot be used during the preview sale on Thursday.) The Silent Auction begins on Thursday evening and ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Friends of the Oak Ridge Library, or FOL, can now accept all major credit cards during its sales.

The sale opens to the general public on Friday, May 11, from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. [Read more…]

A Powell woman who has been charged with attempted murder had threatened to shoot a female victim several months before she allegedly shot into a vehicle occupied by two people in Oak Ridge on Sunday night, and the defendant had reportedly tried to argue with the female victim about her relationship with a male victim, authorities said.

A bullet path in the vehicle that was shot into on Sunday night grazed the driver’s seat, very close to the head and shoulder area of the male victim, Seth M. Davis of Oak Ridge, according to affidavits filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court by Oak Ridge Police Department Officer Christopher W. Wallace.

The female victim, Bailee D. Bolden of Oak Ridge, was hit with glass fragments from the windshield, the affidavits said.

Charged in the case is Kali Annabelle Bailey, 20, of Powell. She has been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of reckless endangerment. Those are all felony charges.

Bailey was located and arrested Monday. Her bond has been set at $320,000, and she remained jailed at the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton on Tuesday afternoon. [Read more…]

Two injured by flying glass in shooting at Manhattan Apartments

Two people were injured by flying glass but were not hit by a bullet in a shooting reported at Manhattan Apartments in Woodland on Sunday night, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at about 11:03 p.m. Sunday at the apartments between South Rutgers Avenue and North Purdue Avenue, the Oak Ridge Police Department said. The ORPD had received reports of gunfire in the area.

“Officers determined shots were fired into a vehicle with two people inside,” the ORPD said. “Neither person was struck by a bullet, but both were injured by flying glass debris from the shattered car window. The two victims were treated on the scene by Anderson County EMS.” [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Community Development Director Wayne Blasius will discuss city needs that have been identified for planning during a lunchtime meeting of the Kiwanis Club on Tuesday.

The noon meeting of Kiwanis Club of Oak Ridge is Tuesday at the Golden Oak Buffet. It’s titled “Oak Ridge City Needs Identified for Planning,” a press release said.

“City Blueprint subarea plans will be mentioned; advance planning information can be seen in links from a summary list of the subareas,” the press release said.

The City Blueprint planning open houses to obtain public input began with a subarea event on May 15, 2017, and they are scheduled to conclude with the final subarea on May 31, 2018, the press release said. You can learn about the progress being made in the cleanup of federal sites in Oak Ridge on Wednesday.

The information will be shared at the annual Community Budget Workshop, which is scheduled from 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 9. It’s hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management, or OREM.

The Community Budget Workshop will be in the DOE Conference Room 2714-G at 235 Laboratory Road in Oak Ridge.

“This event serves as one of the most effective forums to educate the community about OREM’s progress, budget, and priorities,” a press release said. “This year’s discussion will focus on the growing financial support Oak Ridge’s environmental cleanup program has received from Congress, and how this support is helping accelerate cleanup and create new opportunities in Oak Ridge.” [Read more…]

Southern Poverty Law Center forums: Fighting hate, teaching tolerance, seeking justice

There will be two community forums in Oak Ridge this week that will be led by the outreach director of an organization that is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of society, a press release said.

The forums will feature speaker Lecia Brooks, outreach director for the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are scheduled at 2 p.m. Monday, May 7, at the Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road and 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 8, in the sanctuary of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The forums are free and open to the public. They are hosted by Women’s Interfaith Dialogue of Oak Ridge.

Brooks leads the Southern Poverty Law Center’s outreach efforts on key initiatives and social justice issues, the press release said. She frequently gives presentations around the country to promote tolerance and diversity, the release said. She also serves as director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Alabama, an interpretive center designed to provide its visitors with a deeper understanding of the civil rights movement.
