Manhattan Project park hearings can be watched online

Congressional hearings on bills to set up a Manhattan Project park that includes Oak Ridge can be watched online Wednesday and Thursday.

A Senate hearing on the bills that starts at 3 p.m. Wednesday can be watched live at http://www.energy.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/live-webcast, the nonprofit Atomic Heritage Foundation said in a press release.

A House hearing that starts at 10 a.m. Thursday can be watched at http://naturalresources.house.gov/Live/.

Mayor testifies before Senate on national park bill

Mayor Tom Beehan will testify before a U.S. Senate subcommittee on Wednesday, advocating for a Manhattan Project national historical park that would include Oak Ridge.

Beehan will represent Oak Ridge and two other Manhattan Project cities—Hanford, Wash., and Los Alamos, N.M.—as well as the nonprofit Energy Communities Alliance.

He will testify before the National Parks Subcommittee on a bill filed by Sen. Jeff Bingaman, a New Mexico Democrat. That bill, co-sponsored by Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, would set up a national park for Oak Ridge, Hanford, and Los Alamos.

ORAU hosts first Tennessee STEM leadership academy

Teachers and administrators from across the state have been invited to the first academy for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics educators in Oak Ridge.

The three-day academy to explore the latest in STEM teaching practices began at 8 a.m. Tuesday and ends at 7 p.m. Thursday at Oak Ridge Associated Universities.

The opening ceremony included guest speakers ORAU Vice President Eric Abelquist and Thom Mason, Oak Ridge National Laboratory director.

Final Chamber candidate coffee Tuesday morning

Tuesday’s “Coffee with the Candidates” starts at 7:30 a.m, and it features Terry Frank, a Clinton Republican, and Warren Gooch, an Oak Ridge Democrat.

Anderson County Democrats have a “better-than-average” chance of taking back the county mayor and state House seats in the August and November elections, a party official said Monday.

In particular, Democrats believe they can beat first-term legislator John Ragan, an Oak Ridge Republican, said Richard Dawson, Tennessee Democratic Party executive committee member in Senate District 5.

Anderson County jail expansion bids opened

Bids on the project to expand and renovate the Anderson County Jail came in within the expected price range when they were opened Thursday, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.

The apparent low bid of $9.66 million was submitted by Rouse Construction of Knoxville, WYSH reported. The other five bids were said to be competitively priced as well.

Traffic camera money used for sidewalk work

Money from Oak Ridge’s four traffic camera systems is being used to build five new sections of sidewalk along South Illinois and Jefferson avenues.

The city is using roughly $217,000 from a special programs fund set up for the traffic camera money to build the sidewalks and install crosswalks, pavement markings, and pedestrian push buttons at traffic lights, Oak Ridge City Engineer Steve Byrd said.

Oliver Springs offers city manager job to Treece

The Oliver Springs Town Council voted Thursday 3-2, with one abstention, to offer the city manager job to Tina Treece of Rhea County, according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.

The town has been without a permanent city manager since earlier this year when David Bolling stepped down to accept a similar job in Maine.

Gov. Haslam announces $800,000 Jackson Square grant

A rejuvenation of the city’s original town center got a major boost Friday when Gov. Bill Haslam announced a $800,000 grant for parking lot and sidewalk construction in Jackson Square, as well as bicycle racks and benches.

“The Jackson Square project will further Oak Ridge’s efforts to enhance its historic downtown area and provide increased mobility and improved access to small businesses and cultural activities,” Haslam said.

The governor presented a $798,687 symbolic check to Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan during a Friday morning ceremony.

Federal bill another step toward Manhattan Project park

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives today takes a major step toward creating a Manhattan Project National Historical Park that could include Oak Ridge, a nonprofit preservation group said.

The legislation was introduced by Rep. Doc Hastings, a Republican who represents the Hanford Site in central Washington. That site would also be a part of the Manhattan Project park along with Los Alamos, N.M.

Gov. Haslam to announce state grant for major Oak Ridge project

Gov. Bill Haslam will make a special state grant announcement for a major redevelopment project in Jackson Square on Friday, a state press release said.

Haslam will join local and state officials at the announcement, which begins at 11:45 a.m.

Roane County property assessor debate Thursday

The Roane County Tea Party will host a debate with candidates for Roane County property assessor at 7 p.m. Thursday. The meeting will be held in the banquet hall of the Kingston Community Center.

Scotty Mayfield, congressional candidate in Tennessee’s 3rd District, will be speaking as well.
